I frequent the forum, but have never really ran a 1 solution fits all kind of application. Ive gone from very granular rule based firewalls such as Look N Stop to firewalls like the built in Windows. Ive gone through alot of AV's as well.

Im after a 1 stop shop. Im looking for something that is free and offers a firewall/AV combo.

    Requirements:
    1. AV/Firewall
    2. Scans email traffic for Gmail within Thunderbird
    3. Free
    4. No HIPS
    5. Light on the system

Im willing to listen to paid for options, but truth be told Im a cheap person and probably wouldnt shell out cash when I can simply run multiple free options. Just looking for simplicity.

About the only current option I know of that comes close is Comodo. Otherwise I think you'll have to build it piece by piece.

I was just checking into this option. However I dont believe their free version scans emails. Its not a huge threat gate for me, but I like to follow the CYOA philosophy.

It doesn't as far as I know... The other only thing close to what you are looking for may be Roboscan Internet Security, but I don't know if it scans email traffic.

EDIT: lol just saw your sig. I've corrected my post.

The only solution i can think of which might tailor your needs is possibly avast internet security or any of the other paid suites.

I dont think there are many viable programs which you describe as being free unless its a layered approach.

The latest comodo seems to be having a few problems which you may need to bear in mind.

If by 'besides' you mean 'plus', AVG Free has no firewall.

Im willing to bend on the email scanning. That isnt really a necessity. Would just be nice to have. The built in SpamAssassin in Thunderbird does pretty well.

Most AV's with real -time protection should still offer some email client protection as far as attachments and embedded links go. I would think Comodo would detect this even without having to tell it to monitor certain protocols or ports. Then again if you went without Thunderbird and checked your Gmail via your browser; any decent AV will scan that.

I meant excluding, so it has all of the above excluding the firewall protection.:cautious:

Seems like Avira Antivirus + Comodo Firewall (Firewall module only, no HIPS, NO BB) is the best fit for you

    Let's see
    1. AV/Firewall

    2. Scans email traffic for Gmail within Thunderbird
Avira Free doesn't scan Emails, but it scans any and every changes made to the system, reading and writing, by default.

    3. Free
    Check

    4. No HIPS
Double Check, Avira has no HIPS while on x64, if you are on x86 just deactivate Proactiv module during installation.

    5. Light on the system
    Very Light Combo

Avira has some scandalous practices. Wouldnt even use them. Wish I would have jumped on the $5 WSA package.

If your referring to the toolbar issue then that leaves out more than just Avira in the Av department.
