The title says it all. What are currently free scanners that can be used on demand and don't need to have background services running at all times?

You 're right, it's standalone, like CureIt, De-Cleaner, etc. Shame the DE-Cleaners are in german. I guessed the writings, but in case of an infection, i wouldn't want to press the wrong button. :D

Is it normal for Hitman Pro (free) to finish the scan in... 27 seconds? I liked the fact that i was able to manually upload the files i wanted from a list, but does it really scan everything? 27 seconds?

Yes, that's normal, at least with an SSD. It only scans files that can be infected.

Yes, i do have an SSD. Thanks. I feel better now. Well, it's settled then. I will keep Hitman Pro with manual uploading. :D Multiengine is good. :D I may use the others from time to time.

    Thank you all.

I believe if you go to Eset's site for their online scanner but visit the site using Chrome it will prompt you do download an on demand scanner. I can't be certain this will update manually though. I wish it had some way to have it scan individual files via the context menu.

Click the english flag on top left:

    https://www.botfrei.de/decleaner.html

    Gives standalone Kaspserky, Avira, Norton.

The bad thing is that the applications are then written in german... If they were in english, they 'd be wonderful.

You may nog forget that Hitman Pro only scans for executable files: .exe, .scr, .sys, .dll, .com, ... The scan is also limited to the Windows folder and subfolders or other common folders of infections.

Ah, so that's why it's so fast! Good to know. It was scanning so fast that i couldn't tell what was going on, but i saw "Skype", so i thought it was scanning progam files too. Maybe it was user's app data.

I m gonna keep a combination of cloud and offline scanners. Sooner or later malware writers will either try to sever internet connection or alter the hosts file to block antivirus vendors' servers or kill the updating processes. So better have some offline tools too, which i will update weekly.

Thanks guys, my Wilders' paranoia is much more satisfied now! :thumb:

Just a "high risk" Trojan dropper FP from Emsisoft (confirmed by Virus Total).
