Like others, I cannot run spywareblaster 3.1 due to browser hijack so I've been going through my system files manually looking for anything suspicious. Here's what I've found so far:

    a.exe
    commcoss.dll
    e100bmsg.dll
    in10b6.dll
    jao.dll
    killah.exe
    msxml3a.dll

All were in my C/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 folder except killah.exe, which was in C/.

msxml3a.dll is the one that stands out in that it looks like a microsoft file except that it is small case letters and was created at the same time as all the other corrupt files I've found. I did a windows update about 20 minutes after the hijack and all the other MS files created yesterday reflect that except for this one. I'm putting whatever I find in NAV quarantine.

Also, should system restore be disabled when trying to eradicate this bugger?

I've followed all the advice re HJT, CWShredder, AdAware, Spybot S&D, etc., but no luck so far. Whatever it is, it's buried deep. If anyone has some new info I'd be much obliged!

    Thanks

can you please copy & zip all those files and send to me submit@thespykiller.co.uk with a short note refferring to this thread & we'll check them over

    I know a.exe is normally a virus
    e100bmsg.dll probably an ethernet driver

go to https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=12516 and download 'Hijack This!'.
make sure it is placed into it's own folder, not a temporary folder. Then doubleclick the Hijackthis.exe.
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

    File: a.exe

Positive identification (embedded in file): Trojan.Win32.Revop.c
    File: in10b6.dll

Positive identification (embedded in file): TrojanSpy.Win32.Briss.c (UPX)
    File: killah.exe

msxml3a.dll appears to ne a genuine M$ file

    e100bmsg.dll modem or ethernet connected

so jao.dll & commcoss.dll are left as suspects

commcoss.dll has connections to safesurfing & media updatew and dyfuca according to strings I can find inside it

I'm sending them on to both TDS & Kapersky to check out along with adaware etc

I sent you 2 more files that look suspicious. That's all I can see. Is this a combination of problems or all related to CWS hijack? Do I need special removal tools for the different trojans?

    Thanks!

these are a combination of problems

boot into safe mode & delete

    a.exe
    in10b6.dll
    killah.exe

Then until we know what these 2 actually are I would not delete them just in case they turn out to be wanted or neeeded , so the safest way of disabling them is to rename them to .bak so rename comcoss.dll to comcoss.bak & jao.dll to jao.bak

if they are bad as I suspect then they can be deleted later on.

I Haven't received any other files, I just got an email saying you had found some more but no files attached

I sent those files off to you. I've got the other 2 files in quarantine. Should I restore them and change them to .bak or leave them in quarantine?

    Thanks!

if they are already quarantined leave them there

Download this zip: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/pv.zip unzip it to the desktop.
Be sure to have at least 1 Internet Explorer open, then double click on the runme.bat.

select option 2 internet explorer dll and press return
Notepad will open with a log in it

copy & paste the contents of that log back here in a reply

do the same with option 1 explorerdlls and post both logs.

then we should be able to clear you up

the last 2 files you sent me

the n3tpa1p.dll is a favoriteman/Help 4 Smart Browsing hijacker/netpal pest, looks like a new version so that's off to be examined
    and included in updates

the uninstidctr.exe looks like an uninstaller for something, but I don't know what so that's also being looked at

will keep you informed when I find out

if they aren't quarantined/deleted makes sure you do please

cvan you also do a search for something with idctr in the name

I think it's some sort of tracker or identity counter from what I can read in the uninstaller

    try this fix
boot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\fmicj.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\fmicj.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\fmicj.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\fmicj.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\fmicj.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\fmicj.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AFD846EF-F4C0-45BE-B482-51136EC6D068} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\fmicj.dll
    then
Open the pv folder. Double click on the runme.bat
A dos window will open. Please select option 7 after a short while the DOS Windows will close.

    Then run CWShredder
Use the Fix button and follow the instructions provided by the program.

then download AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R299 22.04.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

Nothing came up for that but if it's a hidden file then perhaps search won't find it?

I am not saying it is there but the unistaller suggests a file of that name so perhaps it has been removed by something

I'm clutching at straws trying to track down the causes of the reinfections with these cws pests and every avenue needs exploring in case it's the missing link we have all been searching for

I'm going to get some much needed sleep. Thanks for your efforts and I'll look in tomorrow to see if anyone's found the needle in the haystack.

    Cheers

i had a similar problem earlier it's something to do with tucows being blocked by your hosts file or similar

if the cookies in tucows are blocked you don't get any downloads from them

i had cookies.tucow in my hosts file, removing that allows the downloads
