Is there such an extension? I tried many and they failed on some sites.

I found ant video downloader working with all flash movies so far. Any one using it? It has a tollbar mode also with a search box( but that is not default). Just becoming paranoid if this might be related to ask.com in any way.

What other extension do you people use for this purpose?

    Thanks

aigle, I use Video DownloadHelper and so far, I haven't found a site that I can't download but I can't say that it works on all sites. Your mileage will vary. ;)

    @ aigle

    I'm with JRViejo & Video DownloadHelper :)

It's just been updated & there is an option to install a converter too :thumb: I don't have the converter installed as i have another app that does that if needed. Just thought i'd mention it.

I've noticed that before :( Wonder why ?

    RE - download embedded videos

    Have you seen/got VideoCacheView from - http://www.nirsoft.net - ? It might help !

Yeah i see what you mean ! It doesn't happen often for me, as most www's are fine, but i agree it can happen. Why i don't know, hopefully someone will enlighten us :thumb:

I found a better video on there, a bit lower down :D

Hmmm.... there might be many videos.

Infact I was just happy to find a video that was resistant to be downloaded by all extensions I tried. So I referred to it as an example. I download not so often but I am just looking for an extension that will not fail every now and then.

    High: -http://video.askmen.com/entertainment/high/536-toy-story-3-exclusive-clip.flv
    HD: -http://video.askmen.com/entertainment/hd/536-toy-story-3-exclusive-clip.flv
    Low: -http://video.askmen.com/entertainment/low/536-toy-story-3-exclusive-clip.flv

Wow - that seemed easy. Why can't download managers simply grab the url that way o_O

Could you show (a screenshot) how you found the source on that page for the different links such as "low, high, HD"? I couldn't see those but maybe i just need another cup of coffee :D

    Because that isn't easy.

    Line 347:
    Code:
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://static.askmen.com/includes/js/am/player.js"></script>
    Line 420:
    Code:
    initPlayer('vPlayer','playerContainer', 'video/entertainment/536-toy-story-3-exclusive-clip.xml')
    player.js line 115:
    Code:
    v.setAttribute( 'src', "http://video.askmen.com/" + src );
'src' gets replaced by the sources in -http://static.askmen.com/video/entertainment/536-toy-story-3-exclusive-clip.xml

I haven't found anything that'll work 100% of the time, not free anyway. I've had the best luck with DownloadHelper. But Orbit Downloader (not a FF extension) has a feature called Grab++ that works sometimes if DownloadHelper won't. I have Orbit 2.8.2. I can't speak for any versions after that. I think the reviews aren't very good. :)

When all else fails I just use my ashampoo snap 4 I picked up for $8 and record what I want. It's not 1:1 type but not that bad either.

Good post :thumb: I've looked in sources before when i was unable to DL/save, and i agree it can be confusing. Often on www's with video/s the source can be quite long, and searching for .swf/flv etc doesnt always find the file/s.

Another oddity is, sometimes the file/s don't show in the cache when using VideoCacheView ? They must be in our cache or we wouldn't be able to replay them etc without further streaming etc.

I guess some www's purposely obsufcate the files to try and prevent detection/saving etc :D

I would have thought there must be a simple universal solution available somewhere ?

No, RTMP streams aren't cached. -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Time_Messaging_Protocol

andyman35's streamtransport suggestion is pretty good. Here I found a list of programs that can record rtmp streams. -http://stream-recorder.com/forum/record-rtmp-flash-video-flv-stream-embedded-t2324.html (cookies must be enabled to view that page)

Actually I can now guess why these add-ons can't find everything, they don't support rtmp. -http://forums.informaction.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5009&p=22435&hilit=rtmp#p22435

I have found all the download helper extensions for Fierefox either useless or unreliable, so have resorted to fishing any videos I want to save from cache.

However, Opera seems to be vastly superior in this regard. The other day I downloaded a +/- 1GB HD video from Youtube simply by watching a few minutes to see if it was what I wanted, and then opening Opera's cache from the Tools>Advanced menu, locating the video file, r/clicking and selecting 'save linked content as'. The entire mp4 video is downloaded in the background while I carry on browsing.

    Cached Items Opera.png

Now not being a Firefox aficionado, I may have overlooked something obvious, so can someone advise whether this can be done somehow in Firefox ?
