Now and very soon Outpost will bid far thee well...so you know my next question and until the tooth fairy can afford to up her gift giving a lot no new computers on my horizon anytime soon
I still use version Outpost 6.5.1 on win xp, have for years. Have tested it using some of the leak checkers out there, works ok. It is only a firewall, not a suite, doesn't update. Has "learning mode" which can be switched on or off to aid in configuration. It is still available at Filehippo. The 6.5.1 downloaded installer has the same md5 hash as the installer I have saved here. Nirsoft's hasher shows the download to be version 2725.381.687.328, the installed version here shows 2725.381.0687, don't know why the difference.
pretty sure that outpost has malfunctioning after timeout? forget the silly signatures or predefined rules. i am pretty sure and i already told you about xp, but it seems that your hardware aint capable to use modern software too so why not drop and change to a small linux for the web and office? its a matter of time that more and more vendors drop xp - only few still support XPE and as we know that is different.
Fwiw, I have only ever seen one glitch in the old Outpost free v. 6.5.1 It is that when you go in to the interface and edit the rules, you have edit them one at a time and close the editor after each, else it freezes. Not sure what "malfunctioning after time" out means, but never have seen anything that looks like that.
while using xp with outpost (years ago) it told me that the license has run out for signatures but it did not concern the general functionality concerning rules or hips.
Brummelchen, I understand now. Outpost free ver 6.5.1 is only the firewall, no antivirus. So no signatures as far as I know. If there were updates offered I don't remember (installed it about 8 years ago), don't think so, tho. In any case it works well without continuing maintenance. It may be that I had that issue about the license expiration on Outpost Security Suite (OSS). After it expired on a family members laptop, I started getting a red popup in the lower right of the screen about signature updates expiring. Drove me batty, couldn't find what caused it, no malware, no obvious registry entries, nothing I could find. Only found out when I uninstalled OSS in win 7 last week, on a desktop which had been turned off for years. When I did that, the same popup started on my desktop. I reinstalled win 7, so it went away, but I never did find out how to get rid of it "surgically", so to speak.
ZoneAlarm Firewall still supports XP... System Requirements... Microsoft® Windows XP SP3 - Home / Professional 32-bit, 1GB RAM 1 GHz or faster processor 1.5B of available hard-disk space
Great catch! Thanks a heap. I downloaded a copy to hang on to ... just in case. (I'm presently using a FW of recent vintage, but which is no longer supported . It has decent HIPS & NIPS & Behavior Blocker modules, as well as a FW.) If you want to see screenshots of ZA Free Firewall go here. It looks REALLY good!
Looks interesting but the original poster mentioned firewalls for XP and it doesn't look like this will work there.
Time to move to Linux? I must say I like Windows (phone, tabler, PC), but after having moved elderly relatives (all 70+) to Linux, I must say I kind of start to like it (performs well on old PC's, with looks and safety of Windows 10, without M$ telemetry and phone home issues).
What about Look n Stop?: http://www.looknstop.com/En/index2.htm It was a big Wilders favorite in the XP days: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/forums/lns-english-forum.28/
Hi, Brummelchen. Would you be kind enough to explain more about what that statement means? As stated, I have used Outpost for years with no problems, but lately am experiencing an occasional lockup when awakening from standby. Thanks.
i never used the subscriptions but firewall worked as expected - thats what i meant. but at that time agnitum was not overtaken i never used hibernate or similar - shut down and off.
OK, got it. The version here is 2009 ver. 6.5.1, firewall only, never had the AV, never needed an update. But it does have something called feedback.exe, and it creates logs. I have 99.99% eliminated hardware issues, so it must be a software conflict. Outpost has worked no issues here for years, but I am checking all the usual suspects.. Thanks.
DefenseWall Personal FireWall http://www.softsphere.com/ Apparently still available for download and purchase. Sadly no longer supported or developed. My personal favorite back in the day.

Kerio 2.15 Sunbelt based on kerio 2.15 and enhanced Private The best firewalls ever made @hayc59 - Why can't you just keep using Outpost. Do you really need updates for new packet rules or are you concerned about system rules?
Dynamic Security Agent (DSA) is still good. Download it (free) at http://www.brothersoft.com/dynamic-security-agent-48732.html PDF user's manual at http://www.privacyware.com/DSA_UserGuide.pdf
