Comodo have had a 64 bit version since at least 2008 (version 3.xxx ) Online Armor came later and had some glitches (solved by now) don't know about PFW
In my experience on my 8.0 64-bit: - PFW worked pretty well for the HIPS part. Although I couldn't stand its GUI, so didn't use it really long. I usually never been all that whiny about GUIs but, good gawd it made me see CLI in a much better perspective. - Comodo FW/D+ v6.x never worked properly for me, even when I was still on 7 32-bit. It keeps forgetting my whitelist. But others don't have this problem. Yes, I have enabled the 64-bit mode. - OA, despite my favourite, didn't work at its full potential. The HIPS did give me popups but somehow less effective in 64-bit. IIRC I managed to fix the website blocking problem I had though, by allowing chome.exe, chrome.dll, and oasrv.exe to access the internet. If I'm not being mistaken. YMMV.
For win 7 64, I would suggest AppGuard just as good as Defensewall. Set and forget. Now to find the perfect firewall. Outpost firewall (not the suite) has been working light and fast for me. With this combo you are very well protected.
I have outpost on win 7 but i would like to have something that i can use on both operating systems. Sadly outpost is unstable on xp so it will eventually be uninstalled on win7 as well. But xp is the priority for now since it leaves me unprotected when it dies.
Why win7? You are right about XP OP9.1 is not compatible in a user sense. I have tried almost every firewall out there, including Win 7's built in, but keep coming back to OP (not the suite). Reason; Fast, no slowdowns no lost connections. Has been a rock solid firewall from version 3. Does take a while to set-up and tweak to get the optimal protection. If you have 32bit, go with Defensewall for both systems. Good luck, it is an endless game trying to find the right fit.
trott3r, hello and have you tried version 9.1 on XP? I have it and been running sweet ever since the release! Now I love the thing so, thats why I have it but..if i were to ever be crazy enough and remove it, I would go with Online A or Private never would touch that Comode thang!!
Why not the built-in firewall? You have bigger things to worry about than firewall choice or "outbound control" on an unsupported OS but I digress. If future-proofing is what you desire, then Comodo and OA would be fairly reasonable choices.
Is dns filtering entering a website manually to block it? or is something that downloads from comodo? Agnitum has a spynet or other dns list that downloads but i still get dodgy stuff on cyberlockers.
No, the blacklist is maintained by Comodo. If you want manual inputs then OA and Avast! (latest version I can remember) have that feature. Then there are other methods as well.
Avast is also an antivirus or the full suite with that function? I would rather avoid that method now i have a multi company layered system. As to other methods i am aware of peerblock but it is heavy. Browser plugins has been mentioned before but since i use multiple browsers it will be high maintenance. I guess there is hosts file but i dont know the advantages/disadvantages to that. Have i missed any other methods?
At least v8 still included that even in the free version. Unless they removed it in recent releases. ? ? ? I thought it was one of your requirements? Only things that came up in my mind now: Manual way --> The update is cumbersome since you'll have to manually check any new releases, download it and manually install/replace the HOSTS file. Automatic way (like using HostsMan) --> If the program is exploited then your HOSTS file will be replaced with a malicious HOSTS file. Both ways are also usually will trigger warnings from security software, no matter if it's a legitimate activity or not.
GrafZeppelin: " ? ? ? I thought it was one of your requirements?" Me: "I would like a firewall which has 1) hips 2) site blocking (cyber lockers throw up some unsavoury popup sites). 3) network control" added 64bit version as well as 32bit later on in the thread. I think there is some confusion here. did you think i wanted an AV? or a security suite?
@trott3r I think I misunderstood your previous post. I interpreted it as you wanted to avoid customizable website blocking feature.
Okay glad we got that sorted I do what a customisable website blocking feature but within a security program (preferably a firewall) which will cover all browsers in one go.
