I won't argue it, though I think perhaps there are a few. The idea of one or more firewalls for "Ladies" is as odd, to my way of thinking, as firewalls for "Gentlemen." That was my point, in a polite, backhanded kind of way.

    Hi everyone,
I thought maybe we could "rephrase" the title of this thread just a tiny bit.
Something like Firewall for laymen ~ Firewall for tech illiterate ones ~
or simply call it after the Famous books, in more modern term:
    ' Firewall for dummies ' :D :p
Nothing wrong with that. After all...I am all 3 of those.

That is very thoughtfull of you :)
I'd go with something like in this pic.
    But...only temporarily ! (After all...it's almost Valentine's Day......;) )

Thank you! I considered suggesting pink, or a colour like this text, but was concerned about sounding argumentative!

    How true ...

... so it would seem at times by the OP's choice of wording.

You have been more than just polite.

    Regards,

You are absolutely correct Owlbet. When I mentioned that ZA is easy and 'ready' straight from the box, I forgot to mention that one would of course have to get to know it a little first.

Just like with anything else. "Read the instructions" !

And with the alerts...there are links on them where you get "suggestions" from Zonelabs, in most cases.
Not with all I'm afraid as sometimes it is to them 'unknown' whatever it may be that wants internet access...
But, if there's some program asking for internet access, and we don't know what it is, all we have to do is ask here. There are websites I think, can tell you more about specific kinds of things that needs or does not need access ~ Those kinds you'd want to block.

The header of this thread has been changed to firewall for laymen?? so it will not be gender specific and possibly offensive to some of the members.

Um, wow...that should certainly turn eyes at LAN parties. Just try to imagine playing Doom or Half Life on it. ;)

But on the other hand....some may take it the wrong way, you never know... :doubt:

Not me - so no worry ! :)

Shame on you - "laymen" is still gender specific! :) How about "lay-people" or "lay-beings-of-either-gender"? :D

Laymen covers both genders in a general way, where as ladies is definatly specific ;) There were a few comments made concerning the title so I figured it was easier to change the title than have it possibly offend any members or guest's

    first, my dear friend....
I have to say that you were extremely ~snip~ NOT to search around the forums, especially since 3 or 4 similar topics were running
Secondly, NEVER assume "ladies" would need a simple firewall [or anything else to be simplified]... ask around for who Carly Fiorina is... or look up the story of Sandy lerner and Cisco
And finally, ask your friend to sign up to receive free [nearly] tech-support @ wilders!

I'm glad we're in agreement that femininity has nothing to do firewall choices! (That said, I admit I "glaze over," unable to comprehend lengthy technical text, just like a stereotype of the [dumb] blond bimbo. ;))

SPF demands less attention than any other firewall I've used since learning I was unwise when I took a Zero Knowledge Freedom firewall out of my prior computer w/o understanding what it did or why, and w/o replacing it with anything. I installed SPF last March and haven't needed advice about it yet. With my level of non-expertise, I needed a lot of advice to use ZoneAlarm and Kerio. That's something your friend (who happens to be a woman ;) ) may want to consider. I also like the built-in trace feature. The others didn't have it, AFAIK. Virtually all dubious log activity is my own ISP, coNcast, anyhow, which is reassuring in a twisted kind of way.

[off topic mini-rant] I think they scan to retrieve data from computers that still have the hidden files left by their Transition Wizard. The company lied and coerced customers into using the T-Wiz. They stopped just short of sending a technician to insert it like a friggin' suppository when they took over AT&T Broadband. The encrypted files it created & stashed in a sub-sub-directory included my bookmarked sites. Gee...I wonder if it shows that I'm still angry.

    Fellow Creatures,
Zone Alarm would be my choice for...ladies or lay people in this situation.... just use 4.5 or earlier. Check there release history maybe (but that can get right technical)

:ninja: This thread has had a lot going on in it. It has given me much fun :D
