This is a very basic and simplistic explanation of firewalls. It is the network protocols that should be understood first, the purpose of a firewall then comes naturally.

It is very hard to give useful links that will fit your level of expertise, i.e. I do not know how deep do you want to go in your research/learning. What I usually do is recommend starting at the wikipedia OSI Model page, which gives a nice overview, then following subsequent links to protocols you have interest in. Then, if more in-depth research is needed, you can go to IETF webpage and read Request for Comments which explain each protocol in detail. There is plenty of good info there if you have the time and patience. IETF is the only referent source I can recommend.

I downloaded these 4 tutorials on basic network protocols from - http://www.astaro.com/support/certified-trainings/astaro-fundamental-training

I found out about them after reading this - astaro security gateway edition comparison > https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=261437

I think they will be quite informative if and when get to play them back.

See screenshot from the first tutorial for the scope of what is covered in the 4 tutorials. :)

If you know anything about networking you will probably know a bit about each of those subjects. In my WAN theory class we covered all of that stuff and it was just an entry level class.
