This is the only extension that wouldn't work in the latest Firefox version.

Unfortunately, the developer hasn't replied to any of the users asking for compatibility with Firefox 4. There isn't any development version either.

Therefore, I'm wondering if there is any viable alternatives available.

Is that the one compatible with IE8 acc. stuff? Don't know but Hyperwords probably come close https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/hyperwords/ before it surpasses and keep going. Requires a bit of setup and understanding of how it works to fully become a fanboy. See homepage http://hyperwords.net/ Some features worthy of an extension them self are not enabled per default, like link preview with CTRL. Is an oldie and unlikely to go away any time soon. Just got updated twice recently because of 4. Sadly use Google custom search pages - for 5$ or more you can get a Pro version with real Google.

If all you want is search engines available in a select, right click situation there is Context Menu https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/context-search/ Does nothing else but that.

I have not checked Searchbastard https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchbastard/ but is on to-test list. Might be worth a look. Started out as an advanced Greasemonkey script long time ago. Now extension and seems to get updated. Support concerns should be taken care of. Seems a bit like overkill or doing the job in an alternative way ;) - but can't go by pics alone. You might love just don't know it yet.

If universal search extension is the one I think about previews is a big featue. Coolpreviews is most likely better https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/coolpreviews/ very slick and also good for searching/quick researching with that stack feature. From same people who make Cooliris so should also be safe with regards to support.

I don't like how Hyperwords require restart just to change settings. It's custom Google search doesn't show WOT, Previews, or WebRep. I can't find way to add new search engines. Therefore, it's not for me.

Context Search is good, but doesn't have all the features of Universal Search. At least it works.

Searchbastard doesn't seem to be what I'm looking for. It uses a toolbar instead of search selected words.

But yeah Google custom search gets tiresome - 5$ will fix that ;)

I don't think you will change much once HyperWords is set up - will take some time to walk through all search categories, select what is useful, add own and what not.
