Yeah LOL that's what it looks like. :D Personally I really dislike very dark or black GUIs in general, so I don't think it's pretty at all.

Yeah we'll see, the GUI can't get any worse than this anyway, so improving that won't be hard :D

By the time AVC kicks in, all of BD's cloud components have already cleared the process(es). AVC attaches seperately a library to each and every running process and if a process meets a threshold, the process is killed. Online connectivity is required only to update exceptions and signatures files in folders named Avc3_00283_005 and Avc3Ex_0084_002, with the numbers changing with updates, of course. Exceptions are updated almost daily, sigs every now and then.

Looks like there are four pages to that UI... how about a shot of the one(s) showing, if any, the settings a user can tweak?

    Thanks.

I removed it this afternoon as it was affecting my internet connection. But I will install the next version to see the changes.

    Sorry,

Well, if you've only got 1GB of RAM then the RAM usage is a big consideration and high RAM usage will slow down your computer. But, if you've got adequate RAM installed then the memory usage of an antivirus does not matter.

I have applied to be a beta tester and may give it a try to see if it really is light on my "slow" laptop. I used the quotes as despite the basic specs, my laptop runs quite fast with no security software installed, but will almost always suffer big drops in performance at least some of the time with an antivirus installed.

Does this also uses Bitdefender signatures/engine like their other products?
Does Fsecure products uses latest Bitdefender signatures/engine?
Does Fsecure also uses inhouse engine/signatures?

This beta doesn't appear to use the bitdefender engine. f-secure does have their own engines. one is called hydra and one is called blacklight. f-secure also have their behaviour blocker called deepguard

Isn't the power of F-Secure largely in Bit Defender?

I'm seeing a few of these ultra-lite type products in development, along with several different NGFW/UTM solutions for homes.. I think they are connected. Whereas homes in the very near future will all deploy UTM/NGFW solutions, and require only a 'lite' AV product as a result.

Maybe, but it's most likely what the other 99% of users want = set & forget with little to o system impact! ;) :)

I would certainly describe it as light with little system impact, but more importantly it's very early days yet, in fact it's the first public beta & much can change until it's released and yes i have been trying it out since start of the beta & so far it's the opposite of what F-secure normally stands for historically (IME) = an AV with several engines that drags the system to a standstill.

I think in general security forum users like us are so very different from "normal" users who might very well find this F-Secure Ultralight an interesting AV as it requires nothing besides installing and if the detection is up there with the rest then why not?

"Normal" users would never spend time on something as completely irrelevant as how the GUI looks like as they couldn't care less. They just want something easy, safe & no impact on what they use the PC for if possible. Just think about the many pages in this forum with users who complain about how several of the newer AV's GUI's look like or why there are less & less options in the settings with these newer versions.

I used to be like that for many years, but also couldn't care less about it nowadays (I use Webroot & it's a bad GUI IMO) and if F-Secure Ultralight delivers the protection when the final release comes around i might buy it even with it's strange & absolutely hideous GUI because i won't be spending any time looking at it! ;)

    Windows 7 HP SP1 x64 - Intel E8400/G35, 2GB RAM, 41GB PATA HDD - 50Mbps cable

I ran the online_ultralight_beta executable and with a connection to guts2tp.f-secure.akadns.net in Finland after about three minutes the install completed. An initial scan wrapped up in 4 minutes where 5138 files were checked. Seven minutes, no restart, and ready to rock.

The Program Files directory has nine folders named deepguard-db, hydra, lynx, nif, ulcore, ulu, ului, uss and virgo.

The ProgramData directory is where logs (about 25 of 'em) and the quarantine live as well as a folder, Guts2. Therein nine directories named as in Program Files. In the Guts2 root are eight 1KB files, named for each of the folders, i.e. deepguard-db.title containing text like F-Secure Deepguard DB Update 2014-11-27_01 and F-Secure Hydra Update 2015-01-07_07. The timestamp on these .title files have incremented up every hour, meaning there's some active update checks in place. Clearly, the ProgramData/F-Secure folder is where the heavy lifting is done.

This being my first contact with an F-Secure product, I am not familiar with these but there are a boatload of libraries and support files popularizing those Program Files and ProgramData directories (about 50MB each) with several as .db and .dat.

I searched extensively for additional F-Secure folders in Users and Common Files and none were found. And nothing Blacklight, mentioned by lodore.

What wasn’t found were Bitdefender components and files. I searched for plugins, bdcore.dll, emalware and dalvik. No BD modules or drivers are running.

Persistent connections are maintained by two Services: fsorsp64.exe, the FSORSPClient, to GUID.orsp.f-secure.com:80 in Germany, while fshoster64.exe, the Host Process, to gen.scan.f-secure.com:443 in Ireland. This is your daddy's cloud app. Both services run as permanent DEP and ASLR. Fshoster works in 127.0.0.1.

    Active modules and drivers:
    fshook.dll – F-Secure DeepGuard
    fsgk.sys – F-Secure Gatekeeper
    fshs.sys – F-Secure HIPS
    fsni64.sys – F-Secure Network Interceptor Driver

Opening about 50 new malware and phishing few links in CLEAN MX Realtime and Malc0de resulted in blocks for the same links in both IE and Cyberfox64 Portable. The sole purpose was to present screenies of the alert but 100% blocking was impressive.

At some point I might test actual malware samples. This UltraLight could very well rival Bitdefender Free in the install-and-forget market. Well, if F-secure makes it... Free.

    More later. Maybe. Cheers.

Started testing it again. I like the NSA-related messages. Good idea. :)

My interest in testing ended yesterday and I uninstalled it. I was impressed with its performance and stability "on my system." The malicious URL and phishing filtering wasn’t as good as TrafficLight or Safe Browsing, but then, other than Norton, I don’t think anything is.

I did observe that the Hydra engine updates regularly, once three times in one day but at least daily otherwise. I don't know if that's related to the beta status or the norm for all the F-Scecure products.

I expressed to F-Secure my disdain for the UI even as pretty pretty zoomy jumpy pretty as it is, but that’s just me; any utility that isn’t presented in a sizable multi-pane management console is garbage.

    Cheers.
