    Currently using XP.

I have an internal winmodem. Death or terminal for linux.

I'd like a external hardware modem 56K. One that is reliable, cheap & easy to setup.

I currently use a HDD drawer system. So I'd like to be able have a linux distro on 1 HDD & XP on another.

I've researched & found US Robotics 5686 will work with linux when flashed. And does that disable it's XP functionality?

I don't care. I just want a modem thats easy to use on both. No flashing, no searching for linux drivers. No BS just plug it in.

Any personal experiences from members using both XP & linux will be appreciated. Along with links. The less $ the better. Thanks.

P.S. 56k is my only option currently.

    Hi zapjb

All the USR Sportster/Courier external serial modems work in Linux, stick with the 56k models for best connect speed and fastest downloads. The one you say is fine.

I've found them at flea markets/computer shows for as low as $5 :)

This is the best of all dialup modems, if you see a used one real cheap snap it up fast.

    These work

I use the BestData one, works excellent. About a month ago you could get them for $15 with cable included, but all the Linux guys snapped them up....gone at that price.

BTW, IMO these modems work much better in XP than the PCI modems, I have a Tri connector and 1 modem connects to 3 PC's. :D

Virtually impossible to do. I'm sure if I get a year of linux experience under my belt. Then maybe.

I just want a ext hardware modem where I can easily switch back & forth tween linux & xp.
