I have two SATA hard drives on my pc SATA1 and SATA2 with no promise, no raid. The one that has the OS (win xp) is a primary active partition. The other HD is for image storage. Do I need to make the 2nd HD an extended logical drive for True Image to be able to restore an image from that HD back to the primary HD that had the OS? or can I make them both primary partitions? Only one primary partition can be active right?

No need for extended or logical partitions.
You can have up to four (4) primary partitions per drive, and one of those can be active.

If you're restoring an image, just boot from your recovery CD and select the image off of your backup drive.
