Have just noticed a new version of Eraser: 5.8, at the home page http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/ I cannot access the dl. Just me or something I'm missing? Regards
HHMMM Might have been a bit quick to post this link to Eraser 5.8 here is the sourceforge site for dl http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=37015&package_id=186615&release_id=407684 B4 dling might want to check the Heidi forums: http://www.snugserver.com/phpbb2/viewforum.php?f=2 There seems to be a few bugs for a few users. ?stick with 5.7 for the moment. Lbd.
I am really sorry I ever posted these links and info about Eraser 5.8 The app is still in beta release and seems to have devastated several users boxes, wiping the whole HD and requiring complete reinstall and loss of all data. Check the forums. I was enthusiastic about new release because of prior experience. Seems to have caught a few experienced users. Big lesson Have good backup, run sandbox or something, ?rollback might be OK, ?FDISR for salvage but have something that works below Windows.those users who have lost their system seem not to have been able to do any restore. Thanks.
Another good lesson : beta is beta, which means not for NORMAL use and only for beta-testers. I'm very happy that people got in trouble, some of them need to learn it the hard way. Products like FD-ISR/RollbackRx/Any Image Backup are designed for this purpose.
@ErikA, dont be such a grouch. On reading some of the threads in the heidi support forums, I think not even Rollback would have been enough to save the disc/data. It may have been necessary to have an image/clone off site and be able to reinstall same via boot-up disc and bios settings (BootIt, Acronis, Ghost, Drivesnapshot etc) or Windows reinstall and reinstall app like FDISR or others via new Windows install and offsite storage. Reinforces your longstanding views!! On the downside from Heidi and developers, several of the threads point to little foreknowledge of just how "beta" the 5.8 release was!! Read the fine print! Not really helpful when such a trusted app has wiped your disc. Still dont want to be rude to them for the job they do for free. Such a powerful utility when it goes wrong = decimation. And aftre the latest MS imbroglio (credit to them for quick response) that affected so many third party apps, reminds me not to dl even their updates too quickly. see KMcA and his take on interference with BO Clean LOL http://kevins-rants.blogspot.com/ Sorry again for my rush to give this link. Alittle knowledge can be a dangerous thing.
That's very misleading as it's still in beta, and as already has been said, several problems seem to be lurking within. If it's still in beta, it shouldn't have been publicly announced like that on their site IMO. (Ok, if they had added the word 'beta', maybe.)
Well I downloaded version 5.8, thinking it was the latest release. When I ran Eraser it would develop an error in the preliminary stages of the process that would trigger a reaction from Windows (error reporting, Dr Watson error debugger) and finally ProcessGuard would intervene to protect Eraser from termination (unsuccessfully I must say!). I thought it had nothing to do with Eraser but rather than messing around I decided intuitively to reinstall version 5.7 and that was that. Reading the latest posts I realize I was lucky it didn't create any serious problems. I'm pretty sure when I downloaded version 5.8 there was no beta tag attached to it.
