What is basically the difference between these 2 engines: engine1 and engine2.
Usually (90%) NOD32 updates the engine2 and the update is small. Sometimes engine1 is updated too and update size is bigger.

Are these engines intended for different virus types or what is the difference between them?

They exist for the purpose of keeping updates small.

maybe engine1 is the base definition and engine2 is the incremental definition. so periodically engine1 updated with bigger signature.
