    Hi mgx00,

    Welcome to Wilders!

I am assuming you are running NT/2k/XP.

Those ads come throgh to your system on one of the NetBIOS ports so there are a couple issues. You firewall is not setup right as it is allowing a highly vulnerable service free access to and from the net. Also (though less important) the Messenger service is set to respond to packets targeted for it. This would usually not be an annoyance if it were not for the firewall issue. I recommend that you look over the firewall and make sure it blocks ports TCP&UDP 135-139 + 445 inbound and outbound. The only reason you might not want to do this is if you have a home network with drives or printers being shared between PCs. If this is the case you should try to get a hardware firewall to put at the edge of the network to help protect you.

In any event, to quickly work around the Messenger Spam you can stop and leave disabled the Messenger service. To do this go to the services applet in the control panel and scroll down till you see Messenger, double-click on it to view the properties and select "Stop" and set it's "Startup" value to disabled so you won't have to worry about this after each bootup.

    HTH,

    Dan
