    @Firecat
Ok thanks for the information, I hope they will do a beta program for 5.x though.

(btw. Nika will contact you about translations today.)

Most likely there will be a beta program, but not at this point of time. The last time I enquired, I remember being told something to the extent of meaning that "there is still considerable amount of work remains to be done".

    Thanks! :)

I'm afraid you are a bit wrong about VirusChaser and Dialogue Science team. VirusChaser uses some technologies and modules of DrWeb, but they develope their own GUI for everything. Dialogue Science has nothing with it.

Anyway, next version of DrWeb is going to have a new GUI indeed. :)

Dialogue Science has nothing to do with it now, as indeed the VC development team now use their own GUI. But if you search around this forum for a bit of history on Virus Chaser, you will see that an earlier version of Virus Chaser was indeed written by the Dialogue Science team (or at least, it is suggested so).

Here is the exact thread about the first release of Virus Chaser:

    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=7269

    I am quoting Blackcat here:

However, the current version of Virus Chaser is indeed developed by New Technology Wave with their own GUI. Also note that Blackcat miswrote that Virus Chaser did not have SpiderGuard at that time. The fact was that SpiderGuard was indeed there, SpiderMail was not there though (explained in later posts on the same thread).

well good news indeed but....what about the new spider Gate that has been
in beta like forever ? I remember something about "end of august" ?

oh and btw the lag we have at each updates is annoying as hell when i m watching a DVD or playing a game.

I hope the new ui is more beautiful, less lag if copy the large exe file. I will receive the vc as a gift, but I know they have much differences, the engine is the same but the definition file is not the same, the scan results is different.

Basically the only differences between Virus Chaser and Dr.Web are:

    - Virus Chaser does not have heuristic analysis (it was deliberately disabled because of complaints of false positives)
    - Virus Chaser has an improved quarantine in which all quarantined files are encrypted
    - Virus Chaser has faster On-Demand scannner speed
    - VC has a nicer GUI

Other than that, VC is built much like a clone of Dr.Web, with much of the same structure. Dr.Web 5.0 will include the improved quarantine as well as provide faster on-demand scan speed. So in terms of features, the programs will be on even ground.

Well this is all freat news!! I hope Dr Web keeps its company premise of concision and speed. I wouldn't want to see it turn into VBA32, BitDefender, F-secure, etc. where this is not valued. I'm starting to get excited!!!!

I hope the gui stays somewhat the same. Get rid of the modules, have a unified interface but still keep in simple and to the point.

BTW I've never really understood the function of spidergate. Why do we need it? Everything was caught by the RTM before. I certainly don't see the need given its memory requirements.

I have to add a bit to this. I estimate the On-Demand scanner speed increases in version 5 to be anything from 60 to 200 percent higher than the current Dr.Web on-demand scanner, which is probably why the speed gains have been described as "amazing".

You can also expect some nice speed boosts to the real-time monitor....

spidergate is just an http scanner, much like those in nod32, avast, or kav.

like avast but unlike kav or nod32, dr. web's http scanner uses a separate process.

I got an interesting email from Dr Web this afternoon. Every so often they send out news for those that are of the Dr Web mailing list. It seemed to mention improvements to both the scanner and the GUI, to name a few. Here is the entire bulletin:

Dr.Web Anti-virus becomes even more resouces-sparing for notebooks

    October 3, 2006

Doctor Web, Ltd., a Russian anti-virus software developer, announces the release of the updated version of Dr.Web scanner for Windows. Now, Dr.Web Anti-virus scanner becomes an ideal protection tool for

    notebooks.

During the operation on a mobile computer the anti-virus warns a user that scanning of disks started and that the notebook is charged from battery.

During the operation on a mobile computer starts, the anti-virus warns that the scanning started and that the computer is charged from the battery.

The new version has incorporated the following improvements:
Operation with scanner log file is improved.
Scanner interaction with Windows registry is improved.
Scanning algorithms of processes in memory is improved.
A warning is generated if a computer is charged from the battery.
The program interface has slightly changed.
Incorrect operation after scanning of processes in memory is removed.
Errors in curing of Win32.HLLP.Mila and several old viruses are corrected.
Incorrect scanner termination on computers under Windows 9x is eliminated.
Scanner freezing on computers under Windows 9x is removed.
Errors of incorrect moving/deletion of files and deletion of files on network drives are removed.
Incorrect display of Japanese characters is removed.
Errors in log in csv format are corrected.

Additionally, several minor corrrections are made.

New version of the module can be automatically downloaded during next update of the anti-virus.

Maybe this means we are closer to version 5 that originally thought.

My records indicate that DRWEB32W.EXE was updated as of yesterday, 10/04/2006. I *think* that's DrWeb's on-demand scanner. Am I correct?

I wasn't aware that the beta version (of 5) had been released yet. If it has please provide a link to it.

bellgamin- I believe this update was pushed out to update servers on 10/5/06.

Bummer. I thought I missed something while I was writing my dissertation. Guess not. Well I hope that it'll be worth the wait. Thanks Blackcat.

BTW have you turned you back on VBA32 too?

I know this isn't exactly regarding Dr Web 5 beta but it's worth mentioning. Dr Web has been showing more and more improvements recently at a faster pace. I received another email from Dr Web, the text of which is below. This is nothing but good news:

I think they are trying to stay ahead of the WIN32.HLLM outbreak they posted an article about on their website. Still nice to see though, it really lets you know they are on the ball. Yep think I may just renew for a 4th time here in November...:thumb:

Heck, I still have valid licenses for NOD32 and KAV 6 but I think I might got another for this too; I gave my current Dr Web license to my dad. It works absolutely seamlessly and had absolutely no impact on my system. Their numbers have been decent, not great. But lab tests don't way everything about the real world environment. I'm glad to see that they are slowly (but surely) making improvements to their product, and keeping up aware of them. Which is more than I can say for unnamed AV products that have their official forum here. :)

I agree, they just quietly but effectively keep up with or stay ahead of everything going on out there on the web. now that they have the DrWEB EStore link on their site renewing is easy... :)
