The operating memory is most important, if you don't have a virus running in your operating memory, then it's not active and doesn't need immediate attention. The guard would alert at computer startup/after update/etc. if a virus is active. One full scan per month and weekly express scans should be enough .. I don't scan even that often. People are too paranoid because of continuous intimidation from media/security vendors etc. :D

    @Black Cat, CSJ & Risl,
Thanks for the suggestions! Under the File Types to scan tab, should I have it set to "all files," "selected file types," or "by file name mask?" I have had it on the default, "all files" setting. Below that, I do not have "archives" or "e-mail files" selected. How would I tell it to not scan archives? I think what all of you are saying is: with realtime scanning active (which it always is), a complete scan can be done maybe once a month, with express scans done maybe once per week. If ever there were a "safe surfer," that's me!:D So, this program for scanning should be more than adequate for me. And I agree, our paranoia is mostly "...because of continuous intimidation from media/security vendors etc." Thanks again! I truly do like Dr. Web!

yes, keep it all on 'all files' (guard and scanner settings)

if you dont want to scan archives for on-demand, just untick the 'archives' selection in the settings for the scanner. (F9)

glad you are enjoying the doctor ;)

without archive scanning, my machine does a complete scan in just 9 minutes. (similar to an express scan... if your wondering)

    CSJ,
:) You were right! I ran a complete scan with "archives" unchecked, and it took 37 minutes! And after that, an express scan with "archives" unchecked took 6 minutes. That's certainly a very acceptable scan time to me. Thanks again for your help!:D

of course, you didnt doubt me did you? ;)

the scanner speed is very acceptable, but people forget that drweb has massive packer support and scans soooooo deeply, probably more than any other scanner, so with archives enabled, it can take a while.

archive scanning is not needed, but i prefer to enable it, your guard will find such threats if you try to open any archives with malware inside.

    CSJ,
I had no doubt whatsoever that, if it relates to Dr. Web, you would know!:)
I have one more question: when we first open the Dr. Web scanner, it runs through a quick scan that takes maybe a minute. Is this the same thing as an "express scan?" Or, is it something else. I notice that when it opens and does this, the "express scan" radio button is checked. Thanks again!

it tells you what its doing at the bottom, it prepares the scan, and then scans your memory for any threats that may already be running on your computer, then you can choose complete or express, depending on your pref.

It's so much better when its chilled though...:D

I have to say this DrWEB 4.44 version has some nice tweaks to it. No hesitation with updates.
I may just renew for a 5th or 6th time when my license runs out the end of November...:thumb:

:) I like the new "My Dr. Web" screen!
Very pleasant and helpful utility--gives me the feeling that they want to make communicating with them easier!:) Puts your serial number and expiration date right there in front of you--unlike the ones that make you hunt down that e-mail from years ago when you bought your license to know when it expires!:D

Right-click on "SpiderGuard." It'll be just above 'About.'

 Well, now all of a sudden nothing happens when I click on "My Dr. Web!" Yesterday and today, a right-click on the option causes nothing to happen! Anyone else having this?:(

:D :D Ok, never mind, it's working fine again. A "restore" was all that was needed!

    ok,

well the software has been installed for quite a while now, ive put it few some potential problems, and its succeeded my expectations, so i must agree that this is the best version of drweb to date.

performance of the spider, truly is amazing.

but they didnt listen to everything, i still want the right-click scanning icon changing, it looks totally crappy. (maybe someone can tell me why the drweb link checker has a good icon, yet the release version gets that crappy one)

i know its nothing major at all, but sometimes the little touches are what makes a product stand out from the crowd. :)

ive also requested that the live update service, to be added to the new 'My.Drweb' useful links section. :)

now, we just need the http scanner and HIPS and we will be laughing (at the rest, of course :) )

I would prefer an improvement in scan speed and detection-rate before any chuckling commences :p ;) :D

but they are working on that already ;)

im curious to know how far these other features are away, i hope there isnt some stupid deadline like 12 months or so. o_O

as you know Blackcat, program updates are very slow.

I know but I think that they should give these features priority over incorporating any more new ones such as an HTTP scanner ;)

Look at the time they spent on SpIDerGate; valuable time which could have been spent on increasing on-demand scan speed/detection rates.
