Today I switched from AVG to Avast on my homebuilt AMD 64 3200 that runs XP Home past 3 gb of dual ch. RAM on an Asus A8N-E.
It seems that the web pages load slower. Is it because I have On-Access Protection turned on? What happens if I turn off the On-Access Protection for frequently visited pages? (ie my personalized homepage)

I am totally unfamiliar with Avast and I would like to understand a little more about it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

From what I've seen Avast's Web Shield shouldn't slow down browsing much. You could try disabling it and see if you notice a difference in speed.

You can also disable the shields that you do not need. Here is more info if you interested.

Thanks for the link. Looks like it will give me a lot of info on the various aspects of Avast. I will take your advice and disable it for a longish test ride.

I will consider this question as being Answered and the case is closed.
Thank you all kindly for your help and interest.

    Your welcome Dave!

I would consider the Web Shield as and asset in Avast. If you can use it without slowdown then definitely keep it enabled.

Avast does have a ton of settings and I consider it the most complete free AV. Have a look around yourself and you'll see what I mean.

    Regards,

Not a thing here with avast! v5 Beta - have all shields except Mail Shield as I only use web mail and I'm more than happy with the speed. :)

No problem with speed here using Avast 4.8.

One thing to check is that each of the providers are set to "normal" not "high". High can cause some slowdowns, as more files are scanned.

Another thing to check, and the most likely cause (IMO) is that AVG is fully removed. Did you run their removal tool after uninstalling it?

I'll run AVG uninstaller if I can find it now.
Speed is back to normal (for this dial-up) after Glary Utilities and Defragler did their thing.
I will make sure settings are at normal.
I think I will like Avast.
    Thanks everyone.

The AVG removal tool is available on this Grisoft page.
Make sure you get the appropriate one (32 vs 64 bit, the first or second tool.)

have no problems loading pages with avast home, try disabling different or all shields to see if it slows, if it does then report back.
