I do not use, to block malware using the ClearCloud DNS + Norton Safe Web. :thumb:

Yes, and my HOSTS file is over 5mb.

A combination of MVPS, Dan Pollock's, Cameleon and hp.

I don't use a hosts file, as I'd rather not have some third party make decisions about sites I may want to visit. I also have no need for ad-blocking, as this is taken care of via other, more sophisticated, means.

All in all I consider hosts files to be a waste time.

Restored the default hosts file, and appended a few, necessary lines. Now it's 6kb. I have noticed that having a massive Hosts file craps your Internet connection and locks the PC.

Oh well. Anyway, there's ESET and common sense. I can even use a DNS service.

If you use HostsMan as a hosts file manager along with Spybot SD to lock the hosts file, does HostMan have any functionality at all when the hosts file is locked -- or does Spybot need to be "unlocked" every time before you can update the hosts file or perform any other hosts file activity?

Also, when using Spybot for this purpose, does Spybot need to always be "active," or can you simply lock the hosts file and then close Spybot down?

I don't use special HOSTS file, because I don't need.
I have installed WOT and also configured Norton DNS.

Geez, m00nbl00d, you just responded to a 2+ year old post.
No wonder it didn't look familiar to me. :p
FWIW, the post is too old for me to edit, so if you were serious about removing the link, it'll have to be some mod's chore.
I did check it at urlvoid for you, and it says it's clean.
By the way, I'm currently not running a HOSTS file. ;)

Which link? ;) It's not the dslreports, if that's what you had in mind. Rather this one -http://hosts-file.net/?s=search-and-destroy.com

That's not the website (-http://www.search-and-destroy.com <-- naughty!!! :D) for Spybot. :argh:

FYI. That search-and-destroy.com domain is a GoDaddy.com parked page now.

That's what I saw, and urlvoid has no issues with it.
@ m00nbl00d, it never was a website for SpyBot, which was the point, it was a rogue being served up.

Yes, I know that. But, considering the link was active, users could click on it. lol No problem, though, as it's down! :thumb:

Next time, I'll double check if it's down or not... I just rushed because I was familiar with it, from past days.

    I don't use a hosts file.

I find the combination of Norton DNS and Avast! 6.0's built-in website blacklist to be effective enough for me.

MVP works it has block access to a lot of sites that deem bad. Doesn't slow the system. I did notice that you can reduce the size of it to 97KB instead of 600KB. Those tags need to come out. A good defense starts at the source of the problem the browser. HOST can be use on Android devices. Which I do use.

Within HostsMan, what does "resolve host name" do?

It will translate a domain (example www.wilderssecurity.com) to its IP address.

I use four files totalling 132K entries. Pray tell how many do you have? BTW thanks for the list...think I will add them to my Hostsman lineup.

I think the only ones worth using right now are MVPS, hphosts and Dan Pollock's Hosts as these are updated regularly while the rest are not.

Whereas Dan Pollock's hosts is updated every two days, MVPS and hphosts are updated every month or so I think. Now I have narrowed down to only two hosts files, MVPS and Dan Pollock's. I think hphosts is a bit too aggressive and so not for me.
