What is the reason for a shorter link?
Does it save money, or is it low carbon emissions?

I think I missed the point of it.

    not really.

the only one I use is when I upload something to OneDrive that I want to share.
I then am given the option to shorten the URL.

but beside that and even at that, I really don't see the use in them.

I've already explained that in previous posts, so yes you missed it.

You don't share or store in the cloud? I find url shortener services extremely useful.:)

I dont like to store things in the cloud but i do have an account in MediaFire to share/store random files but i still rarely use it. Probably just a couple times every year and MediaFire works great.

Oh I see. Then you don't need any url shortener indeed.

FWIW, I've run across some not-immediately-obvious redirects through shortening/tracking links. There are some lists of these services around the net. If you have the right blocking capability and are so inclined, you can set up some defensive filters.
