Never used P2P. Don't have a need to. Don't download music or movies. Happy enough without.

I use Bitcomet and Shareaza almost daily. Also running Outpost firewall with Blockpost plugin for IP filtering, NOD32, Spy Sweeper and Ewido. I run regular scans for viruses, spyware and trojans but it's unusual for anything bad to slip past. I don't condone piracy, nug nug wink wink .

 

My precious p2p torrent client is java based Azureus (JRE).
I have file sharing, Netbios and etc disabled. I share only via torrents.

 

I'll bet there's few here who use Usenet or Newsgroups for their stuff. But that's ok you don't have to say who you are. I understand the temptations of getting free stuff, heck just about every security program that's discussed on this website can be found there for free, and just about any other software, music, games, movies etc..... but often without the risk of using p2p.

 

As usual, I'm confused. I thought the whole purpose of P2P was to enable people to download pirated music and movies. Does it actually have a legitimate purpose?

absolutely, some programs like linux distros, openoffice, and autopatcher can be downloaded through bittorrent with great speed.

 

Torrent p2p technology is not illegal, just "some" torrents on some torrents sites. Many webpages starting to use torrents, because if people download via torrents, then those webpages do not need to have such a big upload (to pay much for bandwith and hardware), eg: OpenOffice Bittorents and E-Donkey, Battlefield 2 Demo Torrent, Doom 3 Demo Mac, etc.

 

afaik, the networks and such are legal. the illegal part comes in when u download copyrighted material. correct me if im wrong.

 

Of course I P2P! Have been for many years and always will as long as P2P networks exist. Never got infected either. I use LimeWire Pro, Shareaza and sometimes Morpheus Ultra.

NO I do not use any P2P program at all, IMHO I consider all P2P programs as a serious threat to my computer's secuirty.

 

You are right, p2p are serious security risk, but not as big as some default settings in WinXP.

Shareaza, because it connects to Gnutella, eDonkey and does BT. All in one package(and I can usually max my 8mbps line).

 

I use Emule, because its best for the files I download and share (mostly martial arts clips).

Shareaza is a damn fine app, but I found that 99% of the time I was using Edonkey network, so switched to Emule which is much better on the Edonkey network.

I accept the security risks of P2P, I run a seperate machine on my home network, behind a nat router with spi firewall + common known attack blocking (eg dos); ports only open to that machine, which in turn runs emule as its own limited user, running as a service I also run peergaurdian (also as a service) to block ip addresses I dont want, linked to dsheild attacks, and invalid ipaddress ranges, p2p blocked ips from blocklist. +further general security tweaks. Runs 24/7 usually, for approx 2 years, without hickup or security intrusion.
