Do I need to have anything else running to back up ESS 4 as i had a virus attack 30 mins a so ago ..

What are the best strong protection settings

Default settings are recommended for the typical computer user. Since setups and usage varies from machine to machine, we would need to know more information to determine what could be best for you.

As far as back up protection, using a second antivirus is okay as long as the real-time protection on it is TURNED OFF. We stress turned off because, simply described, antivirus products compete and conflict with each other when running at the same time. You can use a separate antivirus to run a manual scan once a month or so to make sure that your machine is clean. There is not an antivirus product that protects against 100% of threats.

You have to be careful yourself not just allow on software i agree it not possiable to 100% block everything they get cleaver every day dont they.

I just wish those who make virus etc use their skills to better use.
