    It deletes Windows Update backups.

When an update is installed, backup of any changed files are kept enabling you to uninstall the update if there are problems with it. If the update works fine, there is no need for the backup, so it can be safely deleted.

I'm what criteria this uses to decide with backups are unneeded. Possibly it is done on how long since the update has been installed, e.g. if the update has been installed for a while it is probably not causing any problems, but for a new update it would be best to keep the update for a short period to time, in case it causes problems and you need to uninstall it.

The option disappeared for me once I'd used it.

edit: but I can see it is still scanning for those files in the 'calculating' dialog box.

Yes, I'm seeing that too. There are a number of options, such as windows error reporting, that don't show in the window if there are no files in that category that can be deleted. My guess is after the next round of updates are installed the option to delete the backups will appear again.

Interestingly, there was no "clean system files" button, the WU cleanup item was already in the list (and pre-ticked). This may depend on how you do your update checks ... back on XP (and prior) I'd open IE and go to the WU site, but on 7 I just "run" WU from the start menu.

So that you don't get into a panic when you reboot, be forewarned ... you'll get the same "configuring updates, don't turn off" message both shutting down and while rebooting, just like after a real update, although the latter jumps from 30 (35?) to 100 almost immediately. The new procedure is a little unsettling, if you're not prepared for it ... it seems to hang for quite a while while showing 100%, then changes to "cleaning up" for an additional while before returning to the normal startup. In my case I gained about 3 gigs (free space, that is), don't have Office on my system which probably would have amounted to quite a bit more.

How it works is a little confusing. Remember we're talking about Windows 7. If you run Disk Cleanup without elevating it first (run as admin) it will not scan for and include the "windows update cleanup" category. If you then click on the "cleanup system files" button UAC will kick in and ask for confirmation followed by a scan that will include "windows update cleanup". However the "windows update cleanup" item appears in the list on the Disk Cleanup tab with all the other items that don't require elevation, not the "More Options" tab where you can delete system restore points, etc. It's easier to right click and run Disk Cleanup as Admin to begin with if you want to remove windows updates. Note that if there are no updates to delete the item will not appear in the list, however you can observe that Disk Cleanup scans for the updates.

Yes, Disk Cleanup apparently only marks the updates for deletion and waits until shutdown/reboot to actually remove them. Maybe they did it that way so the hard drive wouldn't be tied up while people were using the system?

It does a fairly good job of doing so, but it's not completely clear which I believe explains why there has been some back and forth here.
