    Hello Chaos,

To see if you have the latest & the greatest, direct x do the following:

    goto start > run <type> dxdiag <enter>

    Take Care

Well, I tried! For some reason, I can't get the latest version to begin the download process......it hangs when downloading the DirectX SDK Update which, in turn, leads to an error message ("retry later or check network connection").

Not sure about the nature of the problem since the authentication process went fine and I was able to download and run the dxwebsetup.exe file.

Just install it over the existing version. From the website:

Come to think of it I never have updated DX via WinUpdate. I used to be on dial-up so what I did was download the "redist" versions at work, burn it on disk, and bring it home to install.

I have installed this myself though I have Vista with DX10. I read somewhere that even though DX9 is backwards compatible with DX10, there are times when certain specific 9 files are needed. I now have 9 along with 10 with no ill effects.

Just seems like you can extract it to any directory you wish, run DX Setup, and that will start the install process.

Funny thing is the actual DirectX version number didn't change when I ran DX Diagnostic; it still reads 9c (4.09.0000.0904). Did I screw up or something?
