I have somehow picked up a persistent and very naster dialer called 1on1. Despite all my efforts to follow lots of advice I've found on various discussion forums, it keeps on coming back. Can anyone tell me definitively what I need to do to get rid of this dreadful thing?

I've run latest, updated versions of both Adaware and Spybot S&D, and then run Hijackthis. The log is below. Please help!!

    Hi Rob G,

    Welcome to Wilders.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Update] C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe /i

There also may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:

C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe <-- Delete only the one in the Windows folder, do NOT delete the one in system32 folder.

Reboot and then post a fresh HijackThis log.

    Regards,
    Kent

Many thanks for looking at this Kent - you're the only person on any forum so far who has responded to my pleas!

I've just run Hijackthis again, and found that the above entry referring to a registry key is no longer there. The only thing I've done since posting this query this morning is that I've run Adaware and Spybot S&D in safe mode, which someone told me was a good idea.

I therefore was not sure whether to delete the svchost.exe file from the Windows directory, so I've left it for the time being.

Incidentally, the damned thing has just installed and executed itself again as I was in the middle of writing this post.

A fresh HJT log is below - can you tell me what to do next?

    Thanks,

    Rob

    Hi Rob G,

Just do as in the previous post. If the entry disappears in HJT, just go to the next step booting to safe mode and deleting the file I specified.

    Regards,
    Kent

    OK....new HJT log posted below.

I've also found another hidden file installed by this dialer, called sysinf.exe, which was lurking in the C:\...\Local Settings\Temp file.

    Hi Rob,

I assume you were able to delete C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe since I do not see it running. You still need to fix the entry for it in HJT tho.

I do see another file now you need to delete.
    C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe
Also be sure C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe has not came back.
It seems these two are working together so if you delete one, the other restores it.

Delete them and fix these entries if they show up in your HJT log on a rescan.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Runner] C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe /i
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Runner] C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe /i

Also clean out all your temp folders and caches and empty your recycle bin.
You also need to clean out your system restore point. Here is how if you do not know:
To clean out your System Restore, do the following:

    Turn OFF System Restore.
    1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    2. Click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Check the box beside "Turn off System Restore".
    5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
    6. Restart the computer. (You must restart your computer to clear the old Restore Points)

To Turn System Restore back ON.
    1. Follow the above Steps 1 to 3
    2. UNcheck the box beside "Turn off System Restore".
    3. Click Apply, and then click OK.
    4. Restart your computer.
    5. Then CREATE a new restore point.

    Regards,
    Kent

Thanks Kent once again for your help. You guys are the unsung heroes of cyberspace....

OK...I looked for svchost.exe and lsass.exe in C:\Windows but neither were there. I've deleted everything in the various temp and cache folders, and run HJT again. This still had the reference to 04 - HKLM.....svchost.exe /i, so I fixed it.

The only thing I haven't yet done is cleaned out my restore points. I have a couple of questions first:

    1. I found a file called C:\Windows\Lastgood\system32\dllcache. Is this safe to delete or should I leave it alone?

    2. How do I know if my system is truly free of this thing, before deleting my previous restore points and creating a new one?

    3. If I opted to use system restore to restore my machine back to, say, a couple of weeks ago (i.e. before I ever saw this dialer), would this have solved the problem for me?

    Thanks again,

    Rob

    Hi Rob,

Good work as your log is now clean.

I would leave that alone. if you ever have to "rollback" drivers after you have updated them, this is where they come from. Your last good ones are saved in case the new ones bomb out or do not work.
The basic rule of thumb is how do you ever know if you are completely clean? The best you can do is run different scans and if nothing is picked up and your machine is running OK, then you have to assume you are as clean as possible. If some of these baddies are in your restore points, it is possible for them to come back in some cases, so I would advise to clean them out and start fresh.
It is always hard to tell. A system restore point does not back up everything. It backs up what ever Windows deems important. There is always a posibility that some registry keys will remain as the same for some files. And if you had installed anything new or done any updates, these would be messed up too. I look at System restore as a last resort if I can not fix the problem before I go to the reformat stage. Of course all of this is my opinions on the subjects.

    Regards,
    Kent

Once more I owe many thanks to you and your colleagues. I shall now clear my restore points and create a new one.

If this thing appears again, I'll know where to come!
