Deleting Columns in Text Files

What is the best way to easily delete multiple columns in text files? Is there a special software that will perform this task?

I am sometimes asked to deleted the last few columns in a text file that may contain hundreds of lines of text. I find myself doing it manually, line by line. This is very time consuming and stressful.

Any spreadsheet like software that can load delimited text. Possibly some notepads too
