Hi, I have a rather old desktop running XP that - even optimized - takes its time during startup. For that reason I often put it in hibernation rather than shutting it down.

I would still like to achieve the following at startup:
    a. loading the minimum number of programs to speed it up - as is the case now
    b. then, either through a tweak or an app light on resources (freeware preferred) load *with some delay*, fe one or two minutes later, the other applications that I almost always use, eg Office, Firefox...

    any suggestions?
    thanks

The paid version of WinPatrol permits you to delay a startup program start. Also, Startup Guru offers some excellent manipulation of your startup apps, including delaying and ordering.

    Hi!

    This is what I did:
I disabled almost all startup items, even the ones I use daily.

Then I used the free program "batchrun" to make some .BAT (actually, .brs) files.
I then made shortcuts to those .brs files to run the programs I need. I have several configurations for several occasions, like "communication" (to start MSN, Skype, Xfire, and Thunderbird) and "Internet" to start my browser and some tools that help me browsing the web the way I like.

As you can see you can even use a delay if you like.

FWIW, free WinPatrol will also delay startups... :)

Eagle Creek, thanks for your pointer, I'll try Batchrun, it sounds interesting.
For those in search of a link :) here it is:
    Batchrun

Also, for the record, I found the following freeware app that promises to do exactly what I was looking for:
    StartRight

    Here's the claim:
Keep in mind, I haven't tried it ;)

Very good hint, Eagle Creek! A very easy to handle application I wasn't aware of. Works great for me.

I found it a few years ago, used it for several things and then I forgot about it. Last year I decided I wanted to have a clean start-up list and I started using the program again.

It's just a tiny application that does what it should do: make life more easy :).
