    Here is a short list of software to try out on a rainy day when you feel like being creative...
    All are free, many open source, some available in "portable apps" versions.

    Creative Software
    (1) Writing:
    Twine: Twine is an open-source tool for telling interactive, nonlinear stories.
    Scribus: Scribus is open source desktop publishing. (see also portable apps)
    Sigil: Sigil is a multi-platform EPUB ebook Editor (see also portable apps)
    yWriter: yWriter is a word processor designer for authors to write novels, plays, etc. by breaking your novel into chapters and scenes, helping you keep track of your work while leaving your mind free to create.

    (2) 2D and 3D CAD:
    AutoDesk 123D Design: Powerful, yet simple 3D creation and editing tool which supports many new 3D printers.
    Libre CAD: LibreCAD is a free Open Source CAD application
    SketchUp Make: 3D Design [builds]
    Blender: open source 3D animation suite that can be used to create 3D visualizations such as still images, video and real-time interactive video games. (see also portable apps)

    (3) Graphics:
    Inkscape: a professional vector graphics editor. (see also portable apps)
    Pixia: Pixia is a painting tool made exclusively for full color graphics
    Krita: Krita is a digital painting and illustration application [builds]
