New User of Acronis True Image 11 (build 8,053), on Vista Home Premium. Trying to create self-booting rescue disk.

    BACKGROUND:

New Vista desktop was corrupted by using the Try and Decide function in TI 11 (retail box). I was trying installation of new software in safe zone (Roxio easy Creator 10), but to complete installation needed to reboot, so first hit the Try and Decide "apply" button. Knew from documentation that should not re-boot until "apply" function completed, but computer kept processing for 9 hours and finally I gave up and rebooted - ended up with corruption.

Successfully restored from TI backup file, but had to get to it through windows and TI install disk. The disk I previously creating using the Acronis "bootable rescue media" utility booted up to a screen offering Cleanser, Windows and TI full program - but no way to select any of them as the wireless keyboard and mouse would not function.

F11 also not function so could not use Acronis posted work-around to edit the "quiet acpi = off noapic" script.

    VistaPE CD FAILURE

Gave up on Acronis utility to create bootable disk and found "Beginner's Guide to Creating a VistaPE CD" and followed steps. Down-loaded WinBuilder, and set it to work with original MS Vista Home Premium disk - but it gave error "fltmgr.sys not found, Please install latest SP" I have all "important" Vista updates. Search could not find missing file on Vista disk or in C:\ drive. WinBuilder chose to exit, wiping out project.

Started over to try my luck with WAIK. Also down-loaded ImgBurn. Down-loaed and burned *.img file to DVD. When went to set up WAIK from the DVD got error message:

"This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package"

Would greatly appreciate advice on what I can do to rectify. Will happily supply whatever other info you might need to help me resolve this.

For the TI CD problem, you should submit a support request to Acronis. As far as I know, they have an updated ISO that supports the ICH9/ICH9R chipset. Also, check your BIOS for a Legacy USB option and try it enabled if it's not.

For VistaPE, were you using my VistaPE CD Guide?

On my Vista system, fltMgr.sys is in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers folder.

Is your Vista DVD a pre-SP1 DVD or does it include SP1?

When you burned the WAIK to a DVD, did it verify okay?

What MD5 value do you get on the downloaded WAIK IMG file (I get f5b7f4f56319bb5b451dd2b4cb45d1a5)?

    MudCrab:

I submitted a request to Acronis (concerning the failure of the bootable disk - not specifically on updated ISO I may need) on Tuesday May 27th and have received no reply other than the auto-response. Sent them a reminder today.

Have never gone into the BIOS. If I find my way in (which I am sure I can do) and enable legacy (assuming it is not enabled) - that will just just that when needed and not muck around with anything else?

Yes- I am using your guide (thank you very much) - and for a newbie like me it is a godsend. However the particular blocks I hit were not covered in your guide, or the guide one and two levels down for ImgBurner and WAIK.

I have found the fltmgr.sys just where you said it was (not sure why search function did not find it before). It is very hesitant to let me copy it (says need admininstrator.. which i am, but then just keeps unsuccessfully retrying the copy)... but assuming I can manage to copy the fltmgr.sys file, where (and how) do I put it to get around the WinBuilder block?

I suspect my Vista DVD is pre-SP1 (not say otherwise on cover)

When burned WAIK I did a verification and was OK.

Where/how do I find the MD5 value on down-loaded WAIK img file so that I can answer your last question?

Others with the same chipset have reported getting the updated ISO from Acronis that supports it. Hopefully, you will too.

The Legacy USB setting is often enabled by default so there may not be anything to change. It shouldn't cause any problems. It's basically an option for the BIOS to support USB keyboards and mice for programs that don't know how to access them as USB devices.

For now, just leave it where it is. It's on the computer so the problem is most likely something else.

There are a lot of free MD5 programs available. Microsoft has one available. Live Linux CDs (like Ubuntu) have the md5sum program.

You just run the program on the file and it returns the MD5 value. For Microsoft's, it would be:
    Code:
    fciv [i]filename.ext[/i] <ENTER>
You can see a sample in the lower half of this post.

    ----

When you run WinBuilder, you are for sure starting it in Administrator Mode? If you're not, you will get all kinds of strange errors.

    Hello itobor,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Backup software.

The possible reason of the issue dealing with the mouse and keyboard not working properly is "that USB legacy support" option is enabled in BIOS. So please disable it and this can make the trick.

Could you also tell me the number of your case in Acronis Customer Support Department? I'll check how the issue is investigated.

    Thank you

Nikita - My outstanding support tickets concerning the failure of the bootable recovery disk are: 1501072 and 1513097. These have now been responded to by support personnel Carlos Paz and I received access to an updated ISO that has better compatibility with my chipset. By burning the new ISO to CD and using that as my bootable recovery disk I successful is resolving this issue. I presume the next build of TI-11 (after 8,053) will have integrated support for my chipset.

I did not need to disable the Legacy setting (and I was concerned that doing so might affect some other programs)

Thank you for responding to my posting
