I was user of CounterSpy and still have a licence for it...

This new beta seems to have a lot of improvements, on GUI, active protection, but the memory used isn't good...

After run de on-demand scanner, CS detects the Sentinel as Sentinel Professional Surveillance.

    Code:
    Infected files detected
    c:\\documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs\sentinel\sentinel (low resource edition).lnk
    c:\\documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs\sentinel\sentinel on the web.lnk
    c:\\documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs\sentinel\sentinel.lnk
    c:\\documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs\sentinel\uninstall sentinel.lnk
    c:\\documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs\sentinel

My question is: CS scans the file, or the name of the file?

Thanks for the report. That false positive will be corrected in the next update to CounterSpy'd definitions.

As for why there was a match, CS matched on the complete path to the folder, not the file name. Our researchers are taught to use folder matching sparingly, if at all, but this particular conflict apparently passed unnoticed for some time.

They have a lot of great features and no, I have not heard of any crashes. But it can happen with any software depending on what you have installed. So what do you have installed?

I hear lodore has 9 betas on his.

Nine? He must have removed some.:D :D

Here are the applications that run in real time.
Avira, Win Patrol, Ewido, SuperAntiSpyware, UnHackMe, and SG. I also have Counterspy but have it disabled and on-demand only.

I have been accepted in the beta program. I am not as competent as most here, but if the beta is pretty stable I might try it. I can certainly give some information about operation by a less than expert user.

I have used CS for a couple of years, and have a license good for over 200 days. I have been looking forward to the new version.

    Jerry

Some of those are false positives and are easily corrected (or already have been): Adware.Sogou, RedV Protector, Sentinel Professional.

The VNC detections are not false positives. It may be that you didn't directly install VNC but that some other program installed VNC components. Whatever the case, so far as I can tell, those are indeeed VNC Reg keys.

This seems to be created by HP Drivers for a printer...

Hope you can continue to improve your great program...
    Thanks again ;)

VNCHOOKS is a VNC Registry key. Any idea why an HP printer driver would be creating Reg values and sub-keys under the VNCHOOKS Reg key?

I don't know, I only associate them to HP because the files, on the registries values, are on the HP folder:

    P:\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\Hpqdirec.exe
    P:\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe

Still have the same false-positives with the last definitions version, and seems that with a new one: I-Spy

I'm running the beta resident and scanning after each update.
Regarding stability,I haven't experienced any stability issues with this beta.
    It's been solid here.:thumb:

How long are the updates taking? I am not at home and using dial up. I had to abort the update as after 15 minutes it was still downloading the update. I have found that CS takes a very long time to update signatures.
I hope they improve that a lot, along with memory usage.

The next update to CounterSpy's defs will be released Friday evening -- version #414. Would you please update to #414 after that release becomes available, re-scan, then post a copy of your scan log here? To access and copy the scan log...

    1. View >> Spyware Scan >> Spyware Scan History

    2. Select the scan you'd like to view

    3. Hit "View Details"

    4. Copy and paste the relevant portions into a post here.

    Thanks,

It is stable on my machine (one minor issue with scanning), but keep in mind its a beta.
    Best thing: try out yourself.

When I get home with DSL so I can download the beta I am planning to try it. I am going to watch comments and problems, as I am not very knowledgeable at this stuff.
Lodlore, why don't you try it first, and if your machine is not destroyed, then I will try it. Just count it as a contribution to science.:D :D

Eric, I appreciate the help, and really hope CS 2.0 is a good one. In spite of my complaints, I still prefer CS to either Spysweeper or Spyware Doctor.

    Best,
    Jerry
