I am not infected, but the number of recent CoolWebSearch problems I've read about here at Wilders got me curious about CWS. My limited reading was done at this page:
    http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html#byteverify

According to this, the (byteverify) vulnerability that permits CWS hijacking is addressed by a Microsft patch.

So my question is, could all of these CWS hijacks have been prevented by applying the MS patch?

No. I have every update possible on a brand new comp and still got it. M$ came out with yet another patch for trojan protection just the other day. the problem is that M$ is always one step behind.

On a good note I did hear that those responsible were arrested in Russia yesterday!
