I've been using Eset for quite awhile and am now on ESS V. 3.0.672.0.
ESS is set for automatic updates. I assumed that this meant the daily data files
(which it does) BUT also engine updates (which it doesn't seem to do.)
Also do I want to update to V4?
AND does the above apply to Vista and XP PRO?
Been hearing that it causes trouble for some and works fine for others.
    Please someone enlighten me.

As far as I know automatic update will trigger ALL available updates (signature and other module updates). Module updates don't come so often, so you can be sure if they've been updated after quite some time (random).
However update will not trigger next version(software) upgrade (e.g. from v3.0.672 to v3.0.684) which is kind of dull if you ask me.

EDIT: these modules (including signature module) are em00***_32.dat files inside your installation folder, for example em001_32.dat is virus signature database module (please someone correct me if I'm wrong) :).

We all wait for next major v4 upgrade, hoping to resolve most of the issues discussed here.

    Cheers,
    Miki
