Thanks. I was afraid they decided to make it "default".

Ah, i hadn't heard of this before... Interesting.

With UAC and ASLR features in Vista (which defeats return-to-libc attacks), is there really a separate need for Comodo's protection?

Details are still quite sketchy on the exact nature of the Time Machine but from what Melih has said it's intriguing :D

Even if that was the case there's still the high majority of XP users to consider. It can be easily disabled if it's surplus to requirements.Vista isn't immune to BO threats though:

    Neither is Comodo, I assume.

TBH, the reason I asked this was that all 3xist mentioned was buffer overflow protection when he replied to my original question. I'm just curious as to how CIS compares to other products now, since the CEO's claim of "widening the gap" comes as kind of a surprise.

It's going to be difficult getting an accurate comparison of the AV functionality until it's been thoroughly tested, the HIPS + firewall of course is already recognised as among the best in it's class.

    It won't conflict at least.:)

And majority of people don't know how to activate DEP as its not "fully" on by default in any windows installation, UAC is weakened in windows 7 (at least if you belive reports), so I think the need is there. Vista is far from bulletproof from BO attacks, even with those suggestions of yours, so the need is there and I think its good that COMODO step up and add extra protection against this threat.:thumb:

Because of the changes (specifically Buffer Overflow Protection), I believe I should be uninstalling Comodo Memory Firewall before I apply this update?

thats what I figured - uninstalled memory firewall and CIS and new install went fine. detect shellcode injections (buffer overflow) is checked off under D+ settings

Glad it works fine for you guys. Anyway i decided to put back my 439 version. The new one doesn't have really something i really need. And the most impressive thing in the changelog is the absence of "FIXED!". A confirmation that .439 is a very stable and bug-free version. I believe it's the only changelog since the introduction of v.3 that shows no "fixed!".

    Meanwhile, enjoy your 3.8!

No, i wasn't clear enough. No problem with 3.8, because i didn't install it at all. I thought to bet to a a more "certain" horse, the good, old .439. It gives me all i want and no bug reports to worry about. I am sure 3.8 will be soon ironed out. But i really don't want the BO protection, TC etc. So, i may as well stay with the "combat-proven" .439. It's more than enough for my needs.

    :)

ThreatCast you can disable during installation, And also you can disable it once installed if you choose to enable during installation. Buffer Overflow is an important protection to have.

See this report by Secunia:27 out of 44 vulnerabilities in 2008 found by Secunia research was Buffer overflow vulnerabilities.

    Example report: http://secunia.com/advisories/14912/

Other Vendors don't have this Defense, And it's an extremely important one to have this Buffer Overflow protection, And now, Defense+ does thanks to Memory Firewall integrated into it.

    Cheers,
    Josh

    Re: Comodo CIS 3.8.64263.468 Released

Well, ok, maybe i 'll wait a bit though, till i am sure it's bug-free. Right now i am so happy with .439 that i really don't want to ruin anything with possible problems. I 've changed enough setups in the past days. Never had BO attack on my PC in the past, so i guess a few more months won't change much my chances of getting one. Besides, i 'd have to encounter a BO of those that bypass DEP.

So, i 'll stay a bit longer with .439.

Thanks for the info though. Disabling TC during installation is good thing to know.

Well thats all good too...but how many of those buffer overflows were actually exploited in the wild.... its all good for comodo feeling smug and pointing fingers at other security vendors but I still don't see whats so revolutionary about it....or how necessary it really is.... why would malware authors waste time targeting buffer overflow vulnerabilities on those softwares when we have seen how effective traditional malware expoiting OS vulnerabilities (and user ignorance) still is....buffer overflow may lead to code execution...code execution leads to your av or HIPS picking up the suspicious behaviour or detecting the code being executed by signature/HIPS...its simply wasted memory!

Actually, KIS does have Buffer overflow protetion, mostly trough IDS and PDM/HIPS... There is no option to turn it off/on, it's hardcoded in the application. :)
Sufficient protection pared up with hardware DEP IMO. In addition to that, KIS will warn you if you're running outdated/vulnerable software (via Secunia DB), including those which are vulnerable to BOs.
Running updated software is crucial. ;)

I had trouble with the new version. It was locking up and blocking a lot of processes with no popups. It was weird.

If I recall correctly, someone mentioned the buffer-overflow protection is disabled by default. How does that make sense if it's a new, such "important" feature? o_O

    Re: Comodo CIS 3.8.64263.468 Released

I had trouble installing version CIS 3.8.64263.468, it started when as part of the instillation process you scan your computer. I used to have Orbit downloader (never used it much), that is last year I was surfing on the darkside (I use Sandboxie and Firefox and Tor for this). I was on some political website (don't remember which one it was 4 am. When Orbit says it has some .exe file to download, by the files name I guess it is some porn movie clip. I didn't request a download of any file, so I clicked cancel. Nothing happened :cautious:, after a couple of minutes of trying to stop the download....I finally just shut the computer off for 10 minutes or so. When I thought it was safe I restarted the computer and uninstalled this questionable piece of software right away but left the .exe in my download file for some reasion (don't remember what that reason was) Fast fowarding to Febuary thirteenth 2009 the instillation scan detected the file still in my download folder, at the same time a popup appeared it said CIS had a problem and said CIS had to close I immediately went to the download folder and Erased (overwriten not just delete the File) the objectionable file. Clean the computer with Cc and Tuneups regestry cleaner and re installed CIS, this time the popup said the scan found a problem and CIS had to close. Just kept on cleaning the computer till CSI finally installed, well sort of. CIS just installed the firewall configuration (and CIS just listed the one entry) not the maximum proative Security like I selected. So I uninstall CIS again reinstalled CIS again, same result :shifty: . Then I remember I exported the Comodo Proactive Security.cfg (just had to find where I put it). I re imported the .cfg file, presto I now have four entrys including Comodo Antivirus Security which I didn't install when I first exported the .cfg or any other time as I have Avira AV, but now CIS 3.8.64263.468 is fineally installed.

    Re: Comodo CIS 3.8.64263.468 Released

I tried to install it again on my Vista 64 bit. Installed and all was well for hours running it in training mode then safe mode and thought I was in heaven as all my apps worked and everything communicated UNTIL I turned it to proactive mode and that blocked everything even apps I had listed as trusted and worst part was again I was given no pop ups or a option to allow or not allow on anything. Every program icon on my desktop would not load up and windows was saying that I did not have the proper permissions, hell I could not even tell computer to shutdown!

Figured I would just leave it on proactive and put firewall and defense plus in training mode and do a reboot....BAD decision as when it rebooted I still had no permission to run any programs and Comodo icon that should of been in the lowe right of my task bar was not there although it showed running in the task manager so I had no was of switching it off of proactive and back to firewall where it had previously worked and the icon on desktop would not work since I did not have proper permissions to run it as I guess Comodo was blocking its own self.

So Comodo is longer on my computer and was told by one of the mods there that basically Vista (64?) and the Proactive settings sometimes don't play good together

    Re: Comodo CIS 3.8.64263.468 Released

This build is running fine on Vista x64 here. It also passes a lot more SSTS leaktests than the previous one. I hope they will also expand this again so that it can compete with Outpost there.
    Nevertheless it's the best x64 HIPS :)

I also don't understand this mania about buffer overflow protection. It's much more important that Comodo does reduce pop-ups for the avarage user without losing much protection. Only then it can compete with KIS or NIS.

Of course the detection of the AV is still not great, but there are rumors that Avast will include Coomdo's firewall in the future, then a good trade would be if Comodo gets Avast signatures ;)
