http://windows7vswindows8.com/windows-7-vs-windows-8/how-windows-8-differ-from-windows-7/ Some people actually prefer Metro. "The most attractive part of Windows 8 operating system is its Metro style user interface. This user interface offers you more and more space and neatness. This is possible mainly because it brings all your applications and settings into one specific location. You can access anything and everything through your emails by a single tap from the user interface." Controversial?
Careful with that - is developed by Crawler LLC and sooner or later the setup will be full with toolbars, screensavers and emoticons.
i found the best way that worked for me is to launch desktopp apps from a launcher or from a folder with your shortcuts in it. this way you don't have to switch in and out of Metro if you don't want to.
Microsoft forcibly removed a registry option that enabled the original start menu from the preview releases, they want you to use their big colorful block interface they created for tablets on your PC as well.

I'm glad Win8 doesn't have a Start Menu. It forced my to do what moontan suggested and that suits me better than a Start Menu.
I prefer the stardock replacemetn integrates better with metro - I prefer the classic desktop but like to dip in and out of the metro interface
