I don't like the way all programs are going with hiding their real memory usage, it doesn't improve performance or anything. It is using a huge amount of virtual memory.

 

The virtual memory is "free", many things in an AV doesn't need to be all the time in the RAM, this will slowdown unnecessarily the system. Nowadays taking into account that almost everybody has 2gb of ram or more the important things of an AV is the I/O and the CPU consumption.

 

Hmm, cmdagent.exe is leading on I/O operations on my rig.

Is the input/output access to the hard disk.
So if an AV uses less the hard disk you will get a better performance.

Anyway the I/O readings that the people are posting here are not very useful because it depends on how much time the computer has been working, which kind of task has been the computer doing...

Per example when I was using prevx free with Comodo AV I found that prevx had more I/O than CAV, I can compare them because both were working at the same time, during the same period and after a week to have both installed so both programs had time to make their cache databases.

Disk IO bytes are very easy to predict with CIS. Figure about 519,000,000 Read IO bytes everytime it updates(assuming a new sig file is available). While CIS checks for updates every half hour, there are probably bout 4-7 update sig files per day. The disk IO during the other periods is non existant, but extremely high during the updates.

Virtual memory can be very high, especially on 64bit. I have seen it get over 700meg before, but usually it is in about 550-650meg range.

 

Based on your read io, I am willing to bet the AV signatures updates twice in that period.

 

XP and later operating systems only, I'm afraid.

Prevx does automatic scans in the background, which skew its usage up, but I agree it is on the heavier side in terms of disk IO, but so is CIS due to the large amount generated during updates.

Only used Comodo firewall in the past and manually set "ProActive Security" in Configuration. Now I am using the whole suite (with anti virus and firewall) and the default Configuration is set at "Internet Security". Question...should I leave the settings at "Internet Security" or use "ProActive Security" ?

 

Man you're good. Signatures went from 6083 to 6085.

LOL Yep, signature updates are pretty much what drives CISs disk io bytes. Most other activities do not have a big impact.

 

That's because of the AV... There's still some performance issues that should be adressed.
I run just the Comodo firewall and it uses half of that virtual memory and has very little I/O activity and CPU usage.

 

I just installed CIS v5 in an XP VM. One small problem I had was figuring out how to install the AV. Is it always a separate module that has to be installed after the firewall? That's a little confusing. The 100 meg AV signature update took a while as well since there update server had pretty low throughput at the time. Over all though the program looks great. I haven't been using Comodo security software for quite a while and I can see how much it has improved in this version. I'd like to read some independent reviews of v5 to see how it measures up against the other suites.
