This is a new Ubuntu derivative based on Ubuntu LTS edition 12.04 Its called ChromeBoot OS and it uniquely combine the Google Browser with Unity and a well-balanced selection of Ubuntu applications. For people who like the idea of surfing the web but find Google Chrome OS - well too minimalist, this could be the perfect operating system! http://www.chromeboot.fr/+/Chromebootgrup.png Who says you can't have the best of both worlds? The DVD is hefty... weighing in at 1.5 GB. A word of warning to the wise - its all in French so even if you do an English install via Ubiquity - be prepared to download the English language pack after the installed system boots up to get a usable system - install and reboot and the menus should return to English! That said, its really cool to be able to have a menu of Ubuntu and Google all the same time. Melikes it more than Google Chrome OS!
I think the point of ChromeOS is to be a completely stripped down operating system that just gets you on the web as fast and secure as possible. Having a "hybrid" version doesn't really make as much sense because you lose the speed/security and you're just left with a sort of gimmicky desktop. IMO if you're looking for best of both worlds get a Chromebook/ChromeOS Netbook and a desktop running Ubuntu.
This is the best of both worlds - it allows you to enjoy both the traditional desktop and the stripped-down simplicity of ChromeOS. Its more than a gimmick! I don't see why the benefits of both can't be combined. And it will still be useful offline. And the cost? - FREE! You do pay for the Google Chromebook whereas ChromeBoot can be installed on any laptop/netbook you might already have.
