I am seeking a free text editor (or a utility app) that is capable of counting the number of characters in a document.

Does anybody know of one? If so, a link would be greatly appreciated.

    Aloha from Hawaii,

Thanks Jim. I need the character count for a service that lets me send messages to my doctor. Messages are limited to 1000 characters, NOT counting spaces. Unfortunately, the excellent online counter you gave me DOES count spaces.

I once had a text editor that counted characters, but I cannot remember its name. {In fact, as time marches on, there are occasional days when I can't remember my OWN name o_O} .

    Text Tally.
At install it asks if you want to install its Harmony Hollow Toolbar. I unticked the box, and it behaved.
    Hope it's what you want.

Because of Site Advisor, the MVPS HOSTS file blocks access to HarmonyHollow's website. Maybe it's because of the toolbar.

I will access the site anyhow, despite the HOSTS warning. :argh: Wheeeee!

Been there. It looks okay so I will give it a try. The website says that TextTally is "no longer bundled with SaveNow advertising software" -- perhaps that bundling was what triggered SiteAdvisor.

Another possiblility would be NoteTab Light.

Unfortunately, I am not sure if you can tweak the character count setting to exclude the spaces, in the light version.

TED Notepad is free, portable (if you download zip file and launch) and has many features for a text editor.

Download portable version by selecting zip file here. (In screenshot, using 5.0.3 final)

Just checked and the oldest version, and smallest portable version does the same thing with text statistics.

Easier to use with less clutter in the menus. See which one suits you.
