He shouldn't have made the agents go to the trouble of picking it up. He should have delivered it to the FBI HQ.

Should have told them his lawyer has it and they will have to provide proof of ownership to get it back. You create a paper trail. This way if they didn't use proper warrant procedures you have them by the koyoons. Cha-ching$$
Or, you could keep it inside the car under the drivers seat, unplugging it when you start your drive then plugging it back in when you reach your destination.
