I reloaded Windows XP Home into my Dell Dimension 9150 PC using Acronis TI 9 and when I tried to reboot I got an error message "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
    "windows root>\system32\hal.dll"

Can anyone advise how to get a copy of this file and reload into my computer which wont boot up.

    Peter,

It's definitely a boot.ini problem. Dells have a Diagnostic partition and then the Win XP partition so the boot.ini references partition (2). If you restore a WinXP image to a new HD without restoring the Diagnostic partition then the boot.ini needs to be edited. There are other combinations.
The easy solution is to edit boot.ini directly with EditBini (from a boot floppy or bootable CD), from BartPE or do it indirectly from the WinXP Recovery Console.
