    Hi tanchonghui,

    Welcome to Wilders.

Download the latest copy of CWShredder as you will need it in a later step.

    Reboot into safe mode.

Do all of the following steps in safe mode.

Before you start, please unzip or move HijackThis to a separate folder of its own. The program will make backups in the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a temporary folder or a folder with other programs.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\onka.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\onka.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\onka.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\onka.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\onka.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\onka.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B7737480-091A-4C1D-BE1B-B2E2C7E7CA26} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\onka.dll

Run CWShredder. Be sure ALL other windows are closed and use the Fix button and follow the instructions you will receive.

There also may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

Now delete the following file if still present:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\onka.dll

Reboot and then post a fresh HijackThis log.

    Regards,
    Kent

i had installed spywareblaster and spywareguard. everytime my laptop boots, spywareguard warns that something is trying to alter ie settings. i chose to keep the original ones of course (i had previously changed my homepage setting in ie back to google after installing the two softwares above).

i did as you instructed. a check with hijackthis after rebooting shows that the bane has returned. spywareguard, as usual, was activated.

    i couldn't find onka.dll to delete.

    here's the log, again:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\COMJNK.DLL +++ File read error

    Download: "CopyLock" and unzip:
    http://www10.brinkster.com/expl0iter/freeatlast/CopyLock.zip

    set up these options:
    -Check- 'Show Source paths'
    -Check: 'Allow Downgrade'

Click the 'Add' tab->'Files to rename'
In the 'Look in..' Dialogue box navigate to your
    C:\WINDOWS\System32 directory and stop there!
(*you will not see the file!)
Copy and paste into the 'File name' field:
    COMJNK.DLL
    Hit ->Add.
In the result (destination) erase entire output (copy of...) and
    paste this, instead:
    COMJNK.DLX
Hit 'ok' (On warning of different extension as well)
and on the main box hit the->'Apply' tab
**You will be asked to restart computer!
    Do so right away, next--
navigate to System32 and delete the "COMJNK.DLX"
    file, as it'll be visible!

    ***ATTENTION***
If you get "file not found" error during the process, that
    means it will not work.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    I followed your instructions.

    This is what happened before:
Each time I opened ie or outlook express, or when I checked the bad items from hijackthis for removal, spywareguard was activated 5 times in a row. It prompted that the ie search bar has been changed. I chose to restore the old value. The same thing happens when I close ie or outlook express.

This is what happens now, after I did what you said:
file.txt created by find.bat is now empty. Now I can open and close ie and outlook express with no prompting from spywareguard. But hijackthis still shows some bad items which activate spywareguard (4 times in a row now) and reinstate themselves whenever I try to remove them.

A log of hijackthis is attached.

    Hi tanchonghui,

Before you start, please unzip hijackthis to a separate folder. The program will make backups in the folder in the folder it's in.
These easily get lost in a Temp folder.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\onka.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\onka.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\onka.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\onka.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

    Then reboot.

    General instructions for protection:
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27971

Extra for this particular recurring hijack:
these cws hijackers comes back normally and we are still working on ways to kill them off permanently. What works for some doesn't work for others, but some get rid of it fairly easily.
A workaround seems to be install a good firewall, lists here http://www.wilders.org/firewalls.htm and block these ranges of IP addresses, both incoming and outgoing 213.159.117.0-213.159.118.255, 209.66.114.0-209.66.115.255 and 81.211.105.0-81.211.105.255 both TCP & UDP
that stops the known cws servers responding or the hidden files on your computer updating. This works sometimes but not always, but it's a help with many versions of the cws pest. The problem with this approach is that some good sites might also be blocked.

    Regards,

    Pieter
