I have had a couple of problems recently. My IE home page was continually reset to about:blank. I ran Ad-aware and did a Norton Scan. I had a bunch of spyware, and NOrton found a virus called Verify something. I followed Nortons Instructions for deleting it. So after deleting all the malware, etc, that Ad-aware found, and deleting as per Norton all seemed well.

However, this morning the about:blank was back. So I ran ad-aware again, and more malware was there. Deleted it and and Norton found nothing. As is well again.

I now want to run Spyblaster, but I get this when trying to open; "This program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive or a virus. Please reinstall it."

As per this thread here I followed the instructions in this thread, and I am posting my log below.

I also printed out the info from hijacks author.

    Your help is greatly appreciated

    Hi txinvestigator,

    Welcome to Wilders.

Before you start, please unzip or move HijackThis to a separate folder of its own. The program will make backups in the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a temporary folder or a folder with other programs.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\bkind.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\bkind.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us4nb.hpwis.com/
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\bkind.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\bkind.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\bkind.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us4nb.hpwis.com/
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://srch-us4nb.hpwis.com/
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\bkind.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = http://localhost;

Download CWShredder and run. Be sure ALL other windows are closed and use the Fix button and follow the instructions you will receive.

There also may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\bkind.dll
sp.html <-- You may have to do a search for this file.

Reboot and then post a fresh HijackThis log.

    Regards,
    Kent

Everything is clean; however, Spywareblaster still will not open. I have uninstalled it, downloaded again and reinstalled. No go. :(

    Hi txinvestigator,

Try doing an online virus scan. Some good online scans can be found HERE.

Then post a new HJT log so we can be sure you are still clean.

    Regards,
    Kent

Two reasons. It gives a second opinion as to whether you are clean or not. And some viruses can effectively disable your AV so you think it is working while it is not.

It is definitely the cws hijacker that is causing this problem

these particular hijackers drop several superhidden files that are difficult to find and remove, they prevent spyware blaster and other applications from working

you can try this fix, it has worked in some cases

    try this please
    First download CWshredder from https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=14086
it's a new version that helps with this problem then
    Download this file: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/pv.zip
Please unzip it to the desktop. It will not work if you run it from inside the zip.
After unzipped go to the desktop. Open the pv folder. Double click on the runme.bat
A dos window will open. Please select option 7 after a short while the DOS Windows will close.

    Then run CWShredder
Use the Fix button and follow the instructions provided by the program.

then download AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R299 22.04.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

I still cannot install Spyware blaster. When I try to run Spybot S&D, it hangs up about halfway through.

    Hi txinvestigator,

This time it is a different infection causing the problem.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\dcla.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\dcla.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\dcla.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\dcla.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\dcla.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\dcla.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E626D16D-0606-4401-9406-FF97DCFD3F6D} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\dcla.dll

Download CWShredder and run. Be sure ALL other windows are closed use the Fix button and follow the instructions you will receive.

There also may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\dcla.dll
sp.html <-- You may have to do a search for this file.
Also clean out your temporary internet files and recycle bin while you are here.

Reboot and then post a fresh HijackThis log.

    Regards,
    Kent

Here ya go. BTW, the dcla.dll, nor the sp.html were there upon going to safe mode and physically looking in the folders, and doing a search for the files.

I will see. I also installed and ran SpySweeper. It claims to be a tool to remove CWS. It also has a home page change lock out feature. It found 30 something objects nothing else had found.

I am going to try yo install spywareBlaster. Report back soon

I still cannot open spyware blaster. I get the same message. I used add/remove programs to remove it from my system, I deleted the install file and reinstalled it from this site.

    Same stuff.
