I started to merge an empty 200GB partition with a 500GB partition and canceled the operation about 10 minutes into it. (ya that was dumb) the 500GB then showed unallocated and I couldn't see any files on it.

I used data recovery software to get all the data off but it is all corrupt. its all video and image files. no matter what I try to open any of the files with I get "cannot determine file type" error. windows is showing all the file types properly and attempts to open them in the proper program. a few of the video files will kind of work with no sound or scrambled picture etc.

I was able to use Partition Manager to reallocate my partition without reformatting it. When I rebooted, windows did a check disk for integrity on both partitions and ran through every file. The files are all back but they are corrupted the same as the ones I recovered using the data recovery software.

any help fixing my data would be much appreciated!

I hate to say it, but I highly doubt you'll be able to get your data back. The only other option available is to take it to a data recovery specialist, which can be extremely costly, and you still aren't guaranteed to get all your data back.

Hi, bumping this post. same situ, except luckily the disk was removed before check disk got a chance further scramble it.

i've corrupted the third partition of a data hdd during a partition merge using paragon disk manager 2010.

i was merging partitions 2 and 3 on a 3 partition data drive (no o/s).
partition 2 was approx 900gb data with 300gb spare. partition 3 had 450gb data and 130gb free.

My progress bar got to about 6% before it stopped.

Both the paragon and windows 7 shut down properly.

windows lists a drive letter "W" for the partition but says it's format is RAW.

    * I know next to nothing about what to do with a busted partition.
    * rescue kit 9 didn't see any files to transfer out from the 3rd partition.
    * ideally I'd clone it at this stage and fumble with the clone, but 2tb is too large.
    * are there any non-destructive means to fix this? - i lack familiarity with checkdisk and am paranoid they will recover a sliver of the data very destructively.

    * what's a good open source program to try to sort out this mess non-destructively?
    * and can disk manager work out where some of the unmoved data was before it started shifting things over?

Both partitions were standard windows NTFS. it appears that the data on the 2nd partition is intact, but i haven't given it a thorough looking into.

    i appreciate your input.

Did you try the partition undelete function - pretty sure there is one on Rescue Kit 10 express.

    Hope it helps
