COPENHAGEN, Denmark — A Danish navy ship was heading Thursday toward a small wind-swept island off northwestern Greenland that is at the centre of a diplomatic spat with Canada.

In 1973, Canada and Denmark drew a border down the inhospitable Nares Strait halfway between Greenland, a semiautonomous Danish territory, and Canada's Ellesmere Island.

But the countries decided that sovereignty over Hans Island, roughly 1,100 kilometres south of the North Pole, and others in the Arctic region would be determined later.

Last month, Denmark sent a letter to Canadian Ambassador Fredericka Gregory, protesting that Canada's Defence Minister Bill Graham set foot on the island a few weeks earlier without giving the Danish government advance notice of his visit.

    Ok u Vikings!

    This is war!

U have a lot of nerve sending a warship over to assummably stake your claim on Hans Island in the Arctic(which is ours). :D

It might not be much but that little piece of rock and ice will be defended to the end! :D

Maybe we couldn't settle this in 1973 but don't think u can sneak in here now and annex our precious little good for nothin island. ;) :D

    lol,

I remember reading a few years ago how the Danes had put their flag up on Hans Island and well, this started the riff all over again. :D

A group of Canadian soldiers returned the favour i think last year so i guess them sending this ship over now is the next step in the chess game for the final claim on the island. ;) :D

Maybe our defense minister will recruit the Inuit(eskimoes) to chase them out. :p

    It's just too funny really.
Canada raised a flag and left a bottle of whiskey or something, Denmark retaliates by sending a warship to drop a flag and a bottle of "Gammel Dansk" on the ground :D

But of course $$$ beats common sence any day, both sides want's that oil or whatever is up there.

If you guys don't withdraw immediatly, we will make your airforce use Sea King helicopters. Twenty hours of maintaince required per hour of flight.

There there, now calm down you guys.We wouldn't want another "Arctic Falkland-WAR" now, would we? :D
(I can see it vividly: Send in the Icebreaker-sqd, or better yet: the Infantry-on-skates battalion hahaha)

Hey, I have a much better plan: Why don't you guys do something useful with those bottles: Share them & have a toast together! (It must be bloody cold up there, so why bother to argue)

    Peace ~ Fred :)

Just divide the island in half and install a Customs station and a duty free shop. Maybe station some Mounties there on our side so Danes can have there picture taken with them.

I think the leaders of both countries should face off on Hans Island in a snowball fight. :D

The country of whichever one is left standing, will have the honour of claiming the little rock. ;) :D

On April 18, 2005 a Canadian Hockey Team thrashed Denmark 15 to 1. This latest scrap is the fallout!

They must be selling T-Shirts on E-Bay by now!

    Here we go!!

Canadian Foreign Affairs spokesman Reynald Doiron was quoted as saying,"notwithstanding the disputed area, the Canadian Foreign Affairs Ministry is allowing its cafeteria to sell Danish pastries as a goodwill gesture towards the Danish government and people."

    You want fries w/that?

Dive on, Adm big ed and the Hoorah Gals Scuba Brigade
