HI I recently downloaded your program to demo it. It seems great I've done 2 system back ups and both have "error file not found" messages in the log. The first had 3855 errors, and the second (on a different external drive had 92. I'm not sure if this is a problem or not... Any tips on reducing these errors, or are they a normal part of the process? Please excuse my ignorance I'm not tech savvy at all... Using Win 7 64 and copying to external WD drives from a Crucial 240SSD.
@seeking - the direct cause of these errors is most likely due to your regular user account not having access to files (or folders) in question. If you look at the backup log, it actually gives you the reason for each error. The workaround is to run the app as Administrator (there's an option for that in Preferences). However do keep in mind that Bvckup 2 is not a *system* backup. You won't be able to restore your computer into a functional state from the backups it makes. The app is a *data* backup, it is meant for making backup copies of your data files, such as documents, photos, media files, browser settings, etc. Also, if you have questions regarding the app or its operation, please post them to https://bvckup2.com/support/forum or via the support email. This would simplify my life a bit and help consolidating all support activity in one place.
@angstrom Thanks very much for the help. It's a great program and I think I might well invest in it for back up of my audio drives. Cheers, and I hope you get a lot of success for this product; you deserve it.
Bump. Release 71 is out - adds email alerts/notifications, resolves few shadow copying issues, etc. Full change log here - https://www.bvckup2.com/support/forum/topic/474 A bit of screenshots and commentary leading up to the release is here - https://bvckup2.com/wip
Release 72 is out - multiple copying speed improvements, now "as fast as schnell" Change log is over here - https://www.bvckup2.com/support/forum/topic/502 Happy holidays, everyone!
Release 73 is available, new logging module (now as beautiful on the inside as on the outside), ETA for file copying, monthly backups, etc. Change log is over here - https://www.bvckup2.com/support/forum/topic/539 * If I am being annoying with this, let me know and I'll do it no more.
Alex, Let's say one of our kids accidentally deleted a few dozen files from the Data folder. You don't know which files were deleted. A subsequent backup hasn't run so the files are still in the backup folder. What is the best way to restore these files to the Data folder.
Not speaking for Alex... just copy 'em back. And if you have the destination folder set to ARCHIVE deletions, even if the next backup ran, those files will wind up in their Deleted Archive folder at the destination, not be gone. It works very well...
Understood. What if you didn't have the ARCHIVE option set? You just planned to use a mirror backup without archives. The next backup hasn't been run yet so the files haven't been deleted from the Backup folder. How do you identify the "deleted" files?
Bvckup 2 R73 Rev 9 is out Resolved an issue with the log viewer when the UI is denied access to all log index files. This is may happen if another process (e.g. an antivirus) opens .tdb files for whatever reason in exclusive mode. Reduced CPU consumption while idling. Resolved an issue with the internal timer module -- a potential arithmetic overflow when converting the value of Windows high-performance timer to microseconds. This fix is provisional as I'm not certain that this issue can be ever triggered to begin with (as it would require the timer frequency in the GHz range and the machine uptime in years). https://bvckup2.com/support/forum/topic/539/3348
Release 74 is available - the most important update since the initial release. This is because the memory use is now capped at all times, meaning the app can handle backups of any size. Additionally, the delta copier was revised to both improve the backup speed and the amount of state data saved locally between the backups. Change log is over here - https://www.bvckup2.com/support/forum/topic/598 * The release will trickle down through the update server in the next few days. If you want to update *now*, use https://bvckup2.com/update
Quick PSA - a preview build that implements parallel copying support is now out. It makes for a small miracle for network backups, esp. those going over 1Gbps links: Details are over at this forum thread - https://bvckup2.com/support/forum/topic/837
Can this application detect changes in real time and do backups like OneDrive (for example)? Also. Do you know what happens if the computer is off or asleep when the scan is due? Does it attempt a scan the next login? Is Desktop Mode or Service Mode the better option?
It can detect changes in real-time and it will run a backup shortly after. Re: OneDrive - it should be able to for as long as it is accessible as a regular file system location. Re: asleep - nothing happens, computer remains asleep. Re: a scan on the next login - it's configurable. Re: mode - it depends on what you mean by "better".
I can't get my settings to stick. For example, if I select "Start Minimized", after a restart of Windows, Bvckup 2 starts on my desktop, and when I go in to check my settings, the "Start Minimized" option (as well as other options that I changed from default) have reverted back to the default settings. Also, how do I stop the annoying messages at the bottom of the Bvckup 2 window and in my tray? I have tried clicking Next > Dismiss, but they return again.
This means that %LocalAppData%\Bvckup2\ui\bvckup2-ui.ini is not writable/accessible by the app. Kindly hammer your antivirus in place and delete any existing *.ini files in that folder as they are likely to have their permissions screwed up.
I don't use a resident antivirus. I did for a few decades, but never had one prompt. Only false positives. I tried editing my permissions in that folder, but they're grayed out.
Then something else on your system is messing with bvckup2-ui.ini - either not allowing it to be created, read or removing it between the app's runs. Not observing the "Start minimized" option might've been caused by something else if it were an isolated symptom, but since you are seeing dismissed notifications again, it means that INI changes are not sticky. Also, I'm assuming you are using a recent production release, correct?
