OK, these are old and still they trip people up, like me!

    1. Which is heavier, a pound of feathers or a pound of gold? Go easy: there's more to this than meets the eye.

    2. Two men were about to start on an 18,000-mile auto trip.

"Well," said one man, "our tires have just been checked and the garage man says each of them is good for 12,000 miles, but, not a foot farther. How many spares will we need to do the full 18,000 miles?"

His friend scratched his head and in a minute or two came out with the right answer.

Can you figure the minimum number of spares they would need? (This is based on tires probably in the fifties, not now!)

    3. A rope ladder 10 feet long is hanging over the side of a ship. The rungs are one foot apart, and the bottom rung is resting on the surface of the water. The tide rises at the rate of 6 inches an hour. When will the first three rungs be covered with water?

Have fun, don't think tooo hard! :) I will leave the answer with dog. if my critters demand their dinner, too.

A pound of feathers is actually heavier 16oz. A pound of gold 12 troy ozs. I prospected gold in northern california for a couple of years.

I don't know how to post the answers next to the puzzle, but, the boat answer is "Never, because the boat and the ladder rise with the tide!"

I did find some nuggets in the rubicon and american rivers. After two years just prospecting and having a lot of fun I just about broke even. I came out about $3000.00 ahead, not a lot of profit for two years work but worth every minute.

    Hey BicC,

I froze my fingers and feet off panning and sluicing in the snow in the rivers of the Colorado Rockies, I get cold remembering about it. Found a teeny nugget about as big as a half a pea, and a few flakes after a whole dang winter!!
    Really needed a dredge!!

I found one nugget that was four ozs. when gold was $489.00 an oz. $1960.00 that was a good day. that was in the rubicon river. and getting all wrinkled is not a lot of fun either.

Suppose the ship and the rope is stuck on the bottom, the water even never reaches because the tide is lowering before that ;)
