Regarding my Win 7 update issues above (System Event Notification Service failing to load, also classic taskbar graphics etc). I restored my May 7 image of 7 just prior to the updates this month, then updated again. This time, I installed everything except KB3153171. After several reboots and a day, it seems that solved my issues, and everything is now well and good. If anything borks I'll post an update, but I think KB 3153171 was the offending update. Just a heads up for anyone else who might be wondering.

You might not be the only one with a problem with this particular borker.

Yeah, after updating 7 and trying again, a few days later more problems developed. If and when I do run 7 again, it will definitely be with updates turned off. No doubt anymore...

    Could you enlighten us?
    Which problems developed?
Perhaps someone can link them to a certain update, or to a combination with other factors, so that we can learn from it.
    It's the thread to show-and-tell.

No longer interested in 7, sorry, I've dumped it. It's either 10, which I have right now, or Linux. 7 just has too many issues and problems to deal with anymore. It's interesting to note how well 10 runs on my machine, virtually zero issues or problems. I'm not thrilled with 10, but I have to admit, it sure gets the job done without hassles.

    That's fine, of course.
But some, like me, would've been interested to learn from the problems you encountered after updating 7 and trying again, as you mentioned. But never mind, if you aren't interested in sharing so much.

Both my Windows 7 systems, and that of a friend whose system I help manage, run perfectly, with no issues or problems. I suppose it's all in the details, and your mileage may vary.

@Stupendous Man Yep, YMMV, and it usually does. :)

The "issue" I encountered later was disk related. There was apparently something amiss causing unbelievable disk slowdown and dysfunction. I booted up and wasn't even able to load Chrome, even after waiting several minutes for it to load. So, between the monthly update fiasco and trying to figure out what's going on where and why, to me, it just isn't worth it anymore, especially when 10 works great for me, as does Linux, especially Debian, Ubuntu and Mint, as well as some others.

I don't see any point trying to ponder my 7 problems anymore, so I basically blew it off. If 7 runs well for you, as it does for some others, then that's great, if you want to put up with the monthly update situation (analyzing each update, etc). I also had the monthly slow update check (almost 4 hours to just come up with the list of updates each month). So, as I said, between this, that and the other, 7 is no longer a viable alternative for me. To each his own, as the saying goes...

Bottom line: Use whatever works.. ;)

Thanks very much for sharing, Kerodo. :thumb:

    You're absolutely right.
As my signature says, I'm anticipating on a for future migration to Kubuntu. But the latest buntu LTS seems to be rather buggy, so, if Kubuntu should be messy by the time I need to pick a distro, I might need to pick something else, like Mint KDE, or Netrunner - as you said, use whatever works.

Interesting. This doesn't sound identical to what you are describing, but:

My buddy is having a problem with his Windows 7 machine and there are filesystem symptoms. Disk thoroughly checked plus multiple on/offline antimalware scans. No problems detected. The main, and from the sound of it only, symptom: if you select a bunch of files in a folder and use Shift-Delete on them, not all of them are immediately deleted. Some remain for awhile, in an inaccessible state seemingly related to ownership/credentials, but after a while they eventually disappear. Apart from applying recent OS updates and updating to EMET 5.5, he says nothing else was changed. I suggested he uninstall EMET and see if the strange behavior goes away, but he said it didn't.

All my win 7 machines are running silky smooth. What I do with updates, is automatically hide all the non security updates, and only allow all the security ones. So far so good.

Yes, the latest Ubuntu and related releases are pretty buggy. I have an image of both 14.04.4 and also 16.04 Ubuntu, and the newest has quite a few minor bugs and issues, enough to make me just go back to 14.04.4 when I use Ubuntu. It is rather disappointing, because the LTS releases have usually been pretty clean.

That is something quite different, but interesting, yes. I have noticed the disk issue I have periodically in 7 and also in 8.1, but never in 10, which makes me think there is a bug or something affecting my disk i/o in 7 and 8, which has probably been fixed in 10, but not in the earlier versions. It's pretty vague too, so it's hard to pin it down. I guess I've just given up. It is intersting to note that in 10 months of using Win 10, this disk issue has never shown up at all. Neither is it present in Linux.

On my 7 image, I had been letting all "recommended" and "optional" updates just sit, and only installing the important and security updates. That was going well, but just recently in the past 2 months I've had a lot of very weird and inconsistent behavior in 7, enough to make me really wonder what's going on with the updates.

But as mentioned before, some people seem to be lucky and have no issues, while others sometimes do. Strange, but it probably has something to do with hardware differences.

That's nasty. It also explains why we had many calls from users upgrading to Win10 not knowing how it happened. So we got OK, Upgrade now and also red (X) that all start the upgrade. And a little, tiny "click here" to change or cancel upgrade. Just great MS. How low can you go?

"The Close button on the title bar should have the same effect as the Cancel or Close button within the dialog box. Never give it the same effect as OK." Source: Microsoft's Developer Resources - Design Guidelines.

A poster on another site found this little gem and I thought it was worth re-posting. Microsoft did not follow their own design guidelines when they created this particular Dialog Box.

Yeah, this is just beyond bad... it's downright terrible practices by MS. Shameful... I think things like this will hurt them much more than it helps them in the long run.
