So what is the impact to the average user if MS closes the download center? Will certain downloads be moved to the MS Store? I understand that updates go to catalog.update, but will that not create an even greater demand on a single source?

Windows updates are not causing me any problems, because I can't get any updates ...

Windows 7, manual check, CPU at 25 %. I can wait for hours, but nothing yet.

    I have no idea.
I appreciate the provided information, but I have no idea about the impact.
I really hope Microsoft won't make a mess of it.
I really hope certain downloads won't go missing in the process.

Just keep waiting. It took mine almost 4 hours to come back with the list of April updates, then a few more minutes to finish it's processing. Wait until your cpu drops back to zero (or near zero), then go ahead and download and install them. Patience.... :)

USA still the best. But barely.
That article quotes M$ "This update introduces two changes that require additional manual steps in order to complete the installation: those who installed it right away had a bit of a panic because the guidance was not yet published. We try not to require post-update manual effort whenever possible, and unfortunately in this case it was unavoidable."

So it's the users fault installing the update before M$ published the convoluted install instructions. You ***** M$ blaming the users! Then they want users to contact them to "help" them. *** M$ I guess everybody buys that **** except for here. That goodness for Wilders.

Honestly, I don't really want to bother. What a mess. I see people starting using 'M$' again ...

It's really a disgraceful huge mess that MS is failing to address and fix properly. They should fix the software responsible for the problem (whatever is necessary) and then issue 1 upfront update to all 7 users next month to fix it, before any other updates are delivered. But of course, they won't.

Regarding Microsoft's notification that effective as of the May 2016 security bulletin release, all Windows updates will be available only via the Microsoft Update Catalog, and will no longer be available on the Microsoft Download Center, I wrote, "I really hope Microsoft won't make a mess of it."

Well, here's a nice mess Microsoft is getting us into:
Microsoft Update Catalog seems to require Internet Explorer and the installation of a Microsoft Update Catalog ActiveX control.
With ActiveX Filtering enabled in Internet Explorer it simply doesn't work, with ActiveX Filtering disabled you'll be asked to install the Microsoft Update Catalog ActiveX control.
    I think it's cuckoo.

Not here. I'm switching to Apple, tired of the M$ fiasco. I'll have all my files and programs switched over by the end of this month. Good luck beta testing M$. :D

As I've posted here a few times before, I never wait for feedback before installing updates. I just go ahead any install every update. Of course, now that I'm using Windows 10, I no longer have to do that as Windows does it for me. I can only think of one case in the past few years where an update has caused me any problems.

It was nothing drastic, it just stopped one really old program which I pretty much never use from running. I uninstalled the update and the issue was gone. Sometimes I have issues with Windows 10 updates not installing, and everytime I boot Windows, it tries to install the update, fails to do so, then has to rollback the changes, adding some time to the boot process. However, this isn't a big deal for me, as unless I really need to reboot when installing software or drivers, I reboot at most once a week.

The biggest issue I have with Windows Update is the very long time it can take to check for updates under Windows 7 and Vista. This is annoying, but generally not a big deal in my case, as I use Windows 10 on the laptop I use daily, and I upgrade 99% of the Windows 7 laptops I work on to Windows 10, and there's no need to install any missing Windows 7 updates before upgrading. This means that for me, mostly it's just an issue with Vista machines, and I don't work with them that often.

While it is clear from the posts in this thread that others do have major issues with updates causing problems. I don't have such problems on my own computers or customers' computers. When I'm working on customer's computer, I install all available updates until there are no remaining updates, and the worst thing that happens is that very occasionally an update will fail to install. Even, if Windows Update was causing problems, I would never switch to a Mac, as personally I think OS X is really badly designed and is one of the worst operating systems I've ever used. Each to their own of course, and some people prefer OS X to Windows.

    Roger,

Fortunately I haven't experienced that issue. Does it sort itself out eventually?

@Brian K I've seen it happen a few times, and after some days the problem always seems to go away.

After reading the last few posts, I'm now beginning to think it may be advantageous to turn off Windows updates completely - no more Borkdates, no more Beta testing for MS, no more having to watch for Win 10 updates nagware.
It will save a lot of time and effort.
As regards security - I think I'm covered.

If I was using Win7 I'd never check for updates.

If you feel your seurity is adequate without having the latest updated installed, then it probably won't be a problem. However, have you been experiencing issues cause by updates, or are do you want to disable Windows Update because others are having problems? It's quick and easy to disable updating to Windows 10 with Never10.

It's is exceptionally rare for me see issues caused by Windows Update.

Edit: I guess if you still on Windows 7, you probably are experiencing the issue with WU taking a long time to search for updates.

So what's the story with KB3146706 (on Win 7). Still listed as important, but also still unticked.
    Install or wait?
The latter I suppose, but I would have thought MS would either pull or update it by now.

Another pig's ear by M$ I guess. I noticed it became unticked and I've already hidden it in preparation for when I decide to install the rest of the updates.

Installed KB3146706 without any issue. Checked PC with Never 10 & GWX Control afterwards: all good. Just FYI.

I am running Win 8.1 and downloading all essential updates, but also using GWX control panel and not getting any issues and no Win 10 nagware. Basically I am too lazy to go through all the updates and see what they do, but it seems to work for me.
