Well I restored my win 10 image and then played a bit with it with ERP in alert mode. Man the crap that tried to run without any notice was amazing. I blocked it all with no apparent ill effect. Boy if people realized how MS was trying to own their computers....

It's easier to just go to Settings and untick the background apps you don't want running.

It's just a click with the mouse, in case you don't feel like having your apps working as intended.

Windows 10 are easy to tailor to your needs.
Nobody is trying to own anyone.

These weren't 3rd party apps. They were all windows apps. In some cases not even apps I knew were there.

@Martin_C If they aren't trying to "own" anyone, why do I have to jump thru hoops to keep them from upgrading my win 7 machines to win 10.

@zapjb These weren't privacy issues, but other things.

I noticed the same even after disabling background apps and even after running S-M-R-T to remove all the extra junk, yet multiple windows processes (explorer.exe amongst others) tried to connect out. Also funny how HOSTS files are ignored by MS these days, not that I ever really used them, but still.

Those Windows apps are exactly what you can control with a mouse click in Settings.

As for why you are jumping through hoops, I have no idea.

I jumped on Windows 10, the moment Microsoft released the Insider builds more then a year ago.
    Never any issues of concern.
Windows 10 are everything Win7 and Win8.x ever was and more.
I would never trade in the stability and security in Windows 10, just to be nostalgic with Windows 7.

But that's me. We all have different priorities.

Well the windows updates kill me. As long as I can't control on 10 there is nothing nostalgic about 7. Besides I haven't seen 10 brings me anything new

As a PS, if Win 10 is so much more secure, why all the patches already

You have never ever had a single issue ? Everything has always worked perfectly including your insider days?
You have never ever had any stability issues ? The OS has been totally stable including your insider days ?
From a security point of view, what is it that makes W10 more secure than W7 - just mandatory updates ?

I assume you do not have an Enterprise license. You do not display any of your system specs.

Yeah, I play with it now and then, but I won't run 10 for daily use.. it's incredible. And I don't care at all for MS's business practices these days.

Imaged with Macrium Reflect, created a restore point just for good luck, hid KB3112343 (upgrade to 10), took a deep breath, said a prayer, and installed 18 MS Updates on one 7X64 machine. Will do the same, perhaps without so much praying, on a 2nd 7X64 system a little bit later. So far so good okay.

Edit in: 2nd machine has updates applied and is showing no ill effects. :thumb:

Objecting to mandatory updates are in my mind pointless.
Having a user base with everybody on latest and safest, are the sane choice.

The mess from the past are mostly due to installations not updated, either on purpose or neglect.

Please don't misunderstand the following, but on a regular basis you post about staying on an old OS and also how you don't want updates to that OS.

At the same time you make regular posts about constant updating of third-party security products.

In my head, it just doesn't add up.
You don't have faith in the OS, but have blind faith in third-party vendors who depend on a well functioning OS to run their products on top of.

    It simply doesn't makes sense.

You must have missed parts of a sentence in my post.
I wrote "never any issues of concern"
I didn't say never any at all.
But since you ask, surprisingly few issues.

Can't decipher if you where being sarcastic.

Tell that to the folks who got borked by the latest Outlook fiasco.

I update, but I wait until 2 or 3 weeks later. Also I do skip some updates. And whether or not that makes sense to you, I want the choice. Also I want the choice of when I do it.

FWIW ~ I'll only install Security after scrutiny. I have 80 Important updates and a bunch of Optional in queue and forget # hidden.
Why do I need Bluetooth update deemed Important as I do not run Bluetooth.
Why do I need CEIP update as I prefer not to participate.
Why do I need an update for WiFi poor performance on an Intel Cherry Trail (CHT)-based computer. I'm not WiFi nor CHT.
Why do I need .... etc.
I'll resist all auto-updates, as I prefer hands on.

I kind of like Microsoft and usually don't run into problems after running Windows update manually and only installing updates that are supposed to be important. I usually do this days or weeks after updates are released. As of this moment, I still haven't installed any of Novembers or Decembers updates.

Anyway, yesterday, I decided to update Internet explorer. In my W7, I kept IE9, I like the way IE9 runs and works in my W7 under Sandboxie. A few days ago, I read in a thread here that next January to continue getting updates for IE, we have to have IE11. So, I upgraded to IE11, all went well and the browser ran well under SBIE. As I expected, the sandbox for IE11 takes a few seconds to delete instead of doing it immediately as it does with IE9. I can live with that. I also saw dllhost attempting to run and connect to the internet as soon as IE11 opens up, something that does not happen with IE9. This are things that don't bother me.

But, after upgrading to IE11 and running Windows update again, 4 new updates (KB3035132, KB3078601, KB2912390, KB3035126) from last year and earlier this year were served. Since this updates are probably somehow tied up to IE11, I went ahead and installed them. IE11 ran well but unfortunately I ended up getting a Search warning # 10023 every few minutes or so in Events. Even after rebuilding the Index, I continued getting it. So, I uninstalled all the mentioned updates and went back to IE9. And for the first time ever, I hid an update, IE11.:)

The list of W10 security features will mostly benefit W10 Enterprise Clients - that is why I asked you if you have an Enterprise License. The list is impressive and kudos to MS for it. The W10 non-Enterprise licensees do not get the majority of those benefits.

"While Windows 10 will make inroads in the enterprise, the hardware requirements and infrastructure changes will delay widespread adoption of Device Guard and Credential Guard for at least four or five years"

Re: "never any issues of concern" - I take you at your word. Many others are not in your boat.

    Anyone install KB3093594 ?

I got an email from MS saying that changes were going to be made to WLM in a few weeks, so this patch has to be applied. If it is not applied, WLM will no longer work. I was concerned that I got an email with a weird link in it, rather than the patch coming down via WU. The email provides a link for W7, W8 and W10 - with a suggestion to upgrade to W10.

I googled the patch and it exists on the MS download site. On googling the KB, it appears to be a troubled patch. Some users saying that it crashes WLM rendering it unusable. There are also reports that it is difficult to uninstall the patch after it causes havoc.

No uninstall worries or havoc concerns if you have an image backup.

When I read NICK ADSL UK's post here and checked the KB it didn't mention Win10 in the System Requirements.

    Hi Emmjay,
As far as I understand it the difficulty is going to be accessing Microsft email accounts ONLY from WLM. Quote.......
'In a few weeks, we will be making some changes to our email services that might impact your @outlook.com, hotmail, Live or msn email accounts. These changes will prevent your email from being delivered to the Windows Live Mail 2012 application that you use.'
As they don't mention other email accounts not related to MS I'm assuming they won't be affected, so I will not be updating WLM. Especially as reports say the update completely borks it.

Incidentally the last sentence is laughable ' We also recommend all Windows Live Mail users on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 to upgrade to Windows 10 and use the built-in Mail application to stay connected and get the latest feature updates'

Upgrade to Win 10 just to use the latest email application ? - I don't think so !

EDIT- If I was a suspicious person I would think this was all part of M$'s grand plan to encourage everyone to upgrade to Win 10.

Tnx anon. Unfortunately there is not that level of info in the original email - all those who are clicking on the download site now because they think they have to react quickly (re: changes are being made in a few weeks, etc ...) and installing the patch when they do not really need it. Maybe that is why there are so many complaints about WLM becoming unusable in the past few hours. MS communications bork in this case, rather than an update bork  .

Edit: I take that back. The patch is also borking big time. Best not to install it right now. Uninstalling the patch is a bit complicated according to several users.
