I did! It installed without any issues on x64 W7 Sp1. Actually, I started a thread a month or two ago about how over the first part of this year I'd had problems every month, however, amazingly not a hitch the past six or more months including this week.

Yes, KB3011780 showed up in Windows Update yesterday and I installed it without incident.

It's installed for me fine as well. Thanks for the info though.

MS14-068/KB 3011780 is one of the two patches Microsoft skipped last week. This one fixes another problem with Kerberos, and it sounds pretty nasty:

[The vulnerability will] allow an attacker to elevate unprivileged domain user account privileges to those of the domain administrator account. An attacker could use these elevated privileges to compromise any computer in the domain, including domain controllers.

It's not a statement by me, per se - many users elsewhere are no longer able to use the Registry Hack to fetch Windows Updates on now retired Windows XP.

You may have been lucky, the one time and not next Patch Tuesday or Bork Tuesday.

Except you still haven't provided a reference to those "many users"...

Which there are but in respect to their Forum personas elsewhere, that information will stay posted were it lies. Does not require a search engine to find. Not deliberately being elusive in order to be a thread spoiler nor do I wish to withhold valuable information.

I don't have KB3000850 but when I click on update in control panel I get a dialog box that says "Your set to automatically receive updates, no updates available," When I click on "Check for updates" he dialog box turns red and now says "Windows could not search for new updates, there was a problem checking for updates, error(s)found: code 80072EFE or dt000 "Most recent check for updates- Never" I found this: https://social.technet.microsoft.co...h-80072efe-on-windows-81?forum=w8itproinstall

It worries me that some AV's are so intrusive, or use such offhand coding that they can be disabled, or even brick systems on normal update cycles..

True, but some users in that thread aren't using Avast.

XP EOL, 2003 has a very close impending EOL.

Nobody should be running those at this point anyway, nor complaining when updates get turned off!
