If Win10 will turn out like a disaster launch like Vista...then they might get the next OS right like Win 7, as they will probably go back and check what they did wrong with Win10, to prevent doing the same thing to their next OS. But then they should know very well what the Win OS users want and expect by now since they have made a few good OS's through the years, so they shouldn't need to make any more OS mistakes at all. Apart from the QC of the WUs I guess that they provide for all supported Win OS's, but that's a different matter and area that they can improve when ever they like, if they just want to.

Hmm now I realize that I posted in the bork thread, but there was so much Win10 and updates talk I thought it was the Win10 thread, oh well, the post touch both topics lol.

I don't think they care. These people at MS are so stubborn that they even released a half-baked product like Windows 8, and they completely ignored users' request not to put the stupid metro crap on desktops. If they don't care so may Windows users' request, why would they care a few borked computers?

I am buying a Macbook Pro, finally. Since Windows 8, I really hate the frequent, large number of, large download size of, and often problematic Windows Updates every month. The huge numbers of low-quality "updates" clearly indicate a huge QC problem at MS (for example, some of these update packages were re-re-released. It's really a shame). I decide to ditch this stupid OS and move to OS X, just because OS X has much fewer updates, and the download size is not that ridiculous. IMO, users buy a computer to use it as a tool to do their work, not to get it patched with more than 30 and larger than 1GB of updates every month (if you have MS Office installed, which mostly is the case). No I simply don't have the time and interest to deal with such hassle. I just want an OS that can be used without any extra interruption. If MS could not do their job providing us with a solid OS, then I don't want to leave that crappy Windows on my machine.

Byebye WINDOWS. no more stupid "Installing updates, please wait" crap.

Sad to say , I have to agree

I sometimes wonder if MS experience any panic regarding the growing use of Linux among "non-geeks " ....
... ie your " Ma and Pa " computer users.

I've spent last night and and today installing updates on fresh install of Windows 8, and and updating it to Windows 8.1.

While none of the well over 200 updates installed have broken Windows, I have experienced several issues with Windows Update.

When I first ran Windows Update, it informed me it needed to update Windows Update, and that Windows Update would restart afterwards. After Windows Update closed and reopened, I got the exact same message. When I clicked to continue, Windows Update would restart again with the exact same message. After rebooting, Windows Update worked.

Some updates which were being installed when rebooting, failed to install and the changes had to be reverted. Trying to install the same updates a second time again also failed, but I was able to do the upgrade to Windows 8.1. I had tried previously to update to Windows 8.1 but the upgrade failed (maybe I did not have all the prerequisite updates installed yet, but I was not told why it could not do the upgrade).

Windows Update just found 3 updates. When installing the updates, the number of updates being shown as being installed keep increasing well past 3, to at least 18. It was showing "installing update 18 of 3..." when I last looked, before I got a message saying that Windows Update failed.

At least now, finally it seems I have installed every available update.

roger m, I have read several posts on tech websites that are somewhat similar to your experience. There was no consensus with what was the root cause, but most seem to think the return code messages from windows update is just plain inconsistent. Compounding the problem was poor or inadequate documentation about patches , especially those that were constant re-issues. Many believe that an update from one OS to another does produce WU errors. Your cache of installed updates needs a regular cleanse for WU to work efficiently, but MS has not been forthcoming with rolling up these updates of late.

i had 17 optional updates available yesterday, June 16, which I downloaded and installed on 2 desktop pc's with no apparent problems. Installation went fast with no hitches and both DISM and SFC ran properly after installation with no corrupted files found. MS is getting better at this update thing, I guess.

Win7-SP1. For several days I had in the list of updates to install just these two:
KB3057839 and KB3063858, both kernel updates, issued June 9 (I did other June updates a week ago).
I decided today to install those two because Susan Bradley of WindowsSecrets gave them a blessing.
Both had checks, two to go.
KB3057839 installed. Then, surprise, June MSRT installed. It wasn't in the list. And KB3063858 vanished from sight.
I've seen strange things, but this is unreal.
Comments? Suggestions what to do now?
